ITALY DROPS THE AUTOMOTIVE ACE AT THE MIMS FAIR IN MOSCOW
Promote Italian automotive and components industry, a sector in which Italy is placed among the top five global manufacturers together with the United States, Japan, France and Germany. And, at the same time, replicate the success obtained in terms of promotion and awareness in the last three editions of the fair. These were the objectives with which the ICE, the Italian Trade Commission, organised an official delegation to MIMS (Moscow International Motor Show (www.motorshows-ite.com), held from 29th August to 2nd September 2007 at the Crocus Expo.
Sixteen years after its first edition in 1991, Mims is now recognised as the main event in the automotive sector in Russia and throughout the post Soviet region. Last year approximately 760 traders came to MIMS from 37 countries (there were nine "national" pavilions, including the Italian one run by ICE), spread out over a 30 thousand square meter exhibition area. The 2006 edition of the Moscow fair attracted over 135 thousand visitors.
These figures make MIMS a key event for the promotion of the Italian automotive sector, which includes over 250 companies and registers an annual turnover of 45 billion euros. In 2003 (source: Anfia, latest data available) the automotive components and services sector alone reached a turnover of 22 billion euros, 50% of which derives from export sales. At any rate the entire sector is characterised by a strong international outlook (60% of the Italian automotive industry's profits are a result of exports).
The components sector is based around the Piedmont region, where 40% of Italian suppliers (and 33% of traders) is located, employing a total of over 43,000 workers. About 70% of the automotive supply chain is concentrated around Turin. The Piedmont district, located in the birthplace of the Italian automotive industry, can offer to domestic and international partners access to the entire design and production cycle, from the design to the manufacturing of the vehicle, thanks to a unique concentration of skills and know-how.
These are excellent traits and competences that are well suited to the needs of the Russian automotive market, currently among the most dynamic in the world with an annual sales figure which is projected to reach 2,2 million cars by 2008. This growth is bound to have positive knock-on effects on the parts, accessories and auto-equipment sector - which has expanded significantly in value between 2002-2005 and in the first months of 2006 (latest data available). In 2005, increases ranged from a minimum of 10-15% to a maximum of 50-60%.
This is a unique opportunity for the Italian automotive industry which continues to expands on foreign markets: in the first three months of 2007 exports of parts and accessories for vehicles and engines grew by 7.4% to 3.148 million euros, with a profit of 1.376 million euros (net of imports worth 1.772 million euros, +10,6% year-on-year).
