FROM SORIN THE SMALLEST DEFIBRILLATOR ON SALE
Rome - (Ign) - It's tiny, the smallest on sale. It can be applied easily even to children, and is error proof. This means it is capable of discovering a cardiac arrhythmia that can jeopardize the life of those patients that already had a cardiac arrest, a heart attack, or have cardiac insufficiencies, bringing the beat back to normal, avoiding a new attack. The implantable cardiac defibrillator Ovatio Dr - 29 cubic centimeters in volume and 10,9 millimeters wide - was just recently put onto the European market by the Sorin Group, the leader Italian company in the development of medical technology for heart surgery.
Ovatio is characterized by reduced dimensions and by a particular shape, that allow extreme easiness of implantation together with a minimal aesthetic impact and maximum complications reduction. But the great innovation of this small defibrillator lies in its software, that implements two special algorithms: AAIsafeR™, whose peculiarity is to favour the patient's natural rhythm, limiting any non necessary stimulation and preventing the generation and development of cardiac insufficiencies, and PARAD+™ (P And R Arrhythmia Detection), that allows the defibrillator to recognise any pathological rhythms so that it can act only when absolutely necessary, and in a completely painless manner. The treatment can handle the entire range of ventricular tachycardias, including those particularly rapid pathological rhythms that are usually treated with painful shock therapy. ELA Medical, a company which is part of the Sorin Group, has recently announced the first Ovatio implantations in the United States, a country where the miniature defibrillator has received the approval of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the American body appointed for the control of food and drugs. In Europe, where approximately 400 thousand people are affected by cardiac arrhythmia each year (450 thousand people in the U.S.A.) -the main cause of sudden death-, the number of patients who have undergone an implantation with Ovatio has already reached two thousand.
The patients most at risk are those already affected by a serious cardiovascular pathology: those surviving a cardiac arrest, people who have experienced a myocardial infarct and those suffering from cardiac insufficiencies. But sudden death is unfortunately a bugbear that strikes above all those who are at low risk, because to this day no statistic or medical method exists to establish if a person, who has not had a myocardial infarct or that does not have a heart insufficiency, is at risk of sudden death.
The Sorin Group (www.sorin.com), quoted in Piazza Affari [Milanese Stock Market] since January 2004, has 4800 employees and is a world leader in medical technologies for heart surgery, offering innovative therapy for the treatment of problems pertaining to heart rhythm and for the cure of kidney chronic pathologies. It operates in more than 80 countries worldwide supplying over 5000 medical clinics, both public and private, with a turnover that exceeded 750 million euros in 2005.
