Main Activity
Biofouling of marine surfaces by micro- and macro-organisms is a severe problem that needs to be solved. Antifouling coatings were developed in the past containing tributyl tin (TBT), which has then been banned due to its harmful effects on marine life. New paints have then been developed containing heavy metals, which were also shown to have negative effects on aquatic habitats, or organic compounds belonging to the main families of pesticides and herbicides (booster biocides), whose environmental fate and bioaccumulation potential has not been clarified yet.
The aim of this research is to discover and/or develop innovative, eco-compatible antifouling ingredients for marine paints. The problem is approached through 3 parallel and innovative strategies, which regards:
the selection of eco-compatible organic antifouling agents among the biogenic biocides and "booster" biocides already described in the literature; the development of innovative antifouling paints containing hydrolytic enzymes immobilized on polymeric material; the development of innovative antifouling paints consisting of biocompatible agents able to sequester or degrade chemical mediators (organic and inorganic) involved in bacterial cell aggregation on the surfaces.
