Biopolo Scrl is a private non-profit company created in 1995, involved in the development of biotechnology in Italy. Its mission is to promote activities and initiatives that foster the development of biotechnology through technology transfer, support to R&D Networks and to New Companies.
Following its goal of biotechnology promoter, the activities of Biopolo are the maximization of the research value, the transformation of ideas into business opportunity and the support of biotech companies.
Biopolo is currently located within the area of the IFOM - IEO Campus (The Firc Institute of Molecular Oncology Foundation - European Institute of Oncology).
The development of the biotech industry in Italy started back in the middle of the '90s when a multinational pharmaceutical company decided to close its R&D facilities in Italy. Biopolo was asked to explore new business strategies for these R&D units and found that the most suitable option was the Management Buy Out (MBO or spin-off). Since then Biopolo carried out 3 MBOs feasibility studies and followed 2 successful Initial Public Offers (IPO). Biopolo has also focused its attention on the promotion of new entrepreneurial activities like start-ups and academic spin-offs.
Since 2000, Biopolo realized the Italian Biotechnology Directory in accordance with Assobiotec and supported by local institutions.
The Italian Biotechnology Directory is an instrument designed to provide information and analysis on the Italian Biotech industry. This tool has been designed in two parts:
- a portal that provides information and data on line
- a publication "Facts & Trends" that analyzes, once a year, the evolution of the sector.
The report is also available on line at www.biodirectory.it.

NETWORKING: Biopolo also works in collaboration with other organizations such as Universities and Research Institutes to create a favourable milieu for biotechnology development. As a result, Biopolo, in collaboration with the University of Milano-Bicocca , became Affymetrix Service Provider for the GeneChip® technology in Italy.
