THE TASTE OF EXCELLENCE AT THE PROWEIN FAIR
A journey to the soul of wine: this is the promise given by the Prowein fair , due to take place in Dusseldorf from March 23rd to 25th 2014.
It ranks as the most important exhibition for the German wine sector, and is open only to trade.
The fair is now in its twenty-first year, and offers a vast selection of wines and liqueurs from around the world, with 4,800 exhibitors from 50 countries.
An event dedicated to the wine sector is certain to include Italy, and a collective of 24 companies from various regions will be present. They will be representing one of Italy‚Äôs top products and a sector which makes the country unique at world level for its quality and excellence.
The Italian collective is being coordinated by ICE (the Italian Trade Promotion Agency), and will certainly be one of the most popular of the many attractions at the Prowein fair: an event which will also include numerous seminars, meetings, classes, training sessions and, of course, tastings.
This year, the Italian collective will feature a large number of companies from Campania, and one of the main initiatives will be a ‚Äúprogramme of tastings per price band‚ÄĚ, focusing on the products of the exhibitors themselves.
This scheme has proved to be extremely popular in past editions. In addition, due to the notable presence of companies from Campania, this year‚Äôs programme will include an informative seminar dedicated to the wines from this region. Tastings will take place in a specially equipped area amongst the Italian stands; they will be conducted by expert personnel and will be focusing on local operators from the sector.
For many years now, Italian wine has been steadily moving towards high quality production. Indeed, according to the figures for 2013, DOC wines have been selling increasingly well, and the turnover for companies in the sector has grown by 3.1% to €1.5 billion over the course of the year: a result also boosted by an increase in grape production. The average adjustment in prices was about 10%.
Overall exports for Italian wine in 2013 should exceed the record threshold of €5 billion: confirming its top position in sales of Italian agro-food production.
In the domestic market also, some of the top producers are seeing the first signs of increase in demand.
Historically, Germany has always had an important trade relationship with the Italian wine industry. In fact, it ranks as the main European market, importing more than 6 million hectolitres of wine in 2012. Italian wine sales to Germany in 2012 totalled €957 million, an increase of 4.1%. The country accounts for 20% of Italian sales abroad, coming second only to the USA in terms of exports.
