A TASTE OF ITALY TO SAMPLE AT THE LONDON INTERNATIONAL WINE FAIR
A symbol of Italian-made quality around the world, much sought-after and loved like few others and in which Italy‚Äôs production continues to excel as a global leader year after year. Italian wine has been unaffected by the crisis, as figures relating to the industry have also demonstrated.
The London International Wine Fair, the UK wine sector‚Äôs most important event, offers unique opportunities for discovering its quality, appreciating its taste, exploring what's new and savouring its excellence.
The 34th edition will take place between 2nd ‚Äď 4th June at the centrally located Kensington Olympia exhibition centre, the venue where it first originated and where Italy, thanks to an Italian delegation organised by ICE (the Italian Trade Promotion Agency) will be occupying a space covering 150 square metres. .
Last year the trade fair was attended by 12,000 visitors and this year pre-registrations alone have shown a rise of 15% with the number of exhibitors increasing by 18%. It is against this backdrop that the Italian delegation of 20 selected companies from different regions of Italy (each of which will occupy an open space location) will provide opportunities for getting to know some of the excellences of our country‚Äôs wines, in a market like that of Britain which represents the third largest outlet in terms of value after the USA and Germany.
The United Kingdom is Italy's largest market in volume terms for sparkling wines, which in 2013 recorded an increase of 40%. In 2013 volumes were well in excess of 13 million hectolitres for a value of €618 million. And amongst the fair‚Äôs many events scheduled for the Masterclass Theatre, is the seminar entitled ‚ÄúItalian Wines are Sparkling‚ÄĚ intended for operators and the trade press. The seminar will focus on sparkling wines, given the excellent performance of the Italian bubbly in the UK.
It is worth pointing out that Italian-made sparkling wines ended the year 2013 with record sales, confirming they had outsold champagne: foreign sales increased by 10.3%.
Overall in 2013 Italy once again confirmed itself as the world‚Äôs major producer of wines, with 44.9 million hectolitres against France‚Äôs 44.1 million and Spain's 40 million. In 2013 Italy‚Äôs production increased, compared to the 43.8 million hectolitres of 2012, producing 17% of the world total and 30% of that of the European Union: the value of Italian production is estimated at €9.1 billion.
In terms of turnover, the year 2013 (a year of deep crisis for many other sectors) closed with €5.6 billion, an increase of 4.8% (following the 7.7% recorded the preceding year). In short, it is a sector that has proved its quality even statistically and which, as the success of sparkling wines has demonstrated in recent years, despite its unquestioned leadership still offers new and excellent products all yet to be discovered and enjoyed.
