ITALIAN MACHINES FOR PLASTIC EXHIBITED AT BRASILPLAST

Rome (Ign) - Plastic materials have been among the most common and widely used materials both in industry and in the production of an infinite number of goods for consumer use for decades now. Hence, it is natural that the plastic production and processing machinery industry, in which Italy occupies a position of primary importance, covers a significant position on the capital goods market. Italy's participation in the next edition of Brasilplast 2007 (www.brasilplast.com.br), the most important South American trade fair dedicated to the plastic industry, held in Sao Paolo from 7th to 11th May, will be seen in this context. Its presence is guaranteed by the collective participation organised by the Italian Institute for Foreign Trade (ICE), in association with Assocomaplast (www.assocomaplast.org), the association that unites the Italian companies who operate in the sector.
The Italian plastic and rubber production and processing machinery industry is constantly growing: the industry's total turnover reached € 3.7 billion in 2006, succeeding in covering a share of about 18% of the total of the Italian machinery and capital goods industry. Italian companies now realise almost 60% of their turnover on foreign markets, with a growth in Italian technology sales which registered a 3.8% increase in the second half of 2006, bringing the balance of trade in the industry up to € 1.5 billion.
The Italian companies' continued success in this division on the foreign markets is the result of their constant ability to adapt to technological evolution, combined with great flexibility in supply. And Brazil now appears to be a target market of increasing interest. In 2006 it was in 13th place in the classification for Italian export in the sector and, on the other hand, Italy is among Brazil's main suppliers of plastic and rubber production and processing machinery, with a turnover which exceeds € 45 million (equal to a 13.2% share of the total Brazilian imports in this industry in 2006). The other main customers in this industry are predominantly located in the European area. Germany stands out as best buyer in 2006 with 10.6% of the total, but export to the other European countries is constantly growing, with peaks of 50%. Other important markets outside the European Union are China (6.3% of Italian export in the sector), Russia (6.6%) and the USA (6.5%).
The market made up of the Italian companies that operate in the sector is now a consolidated success, mainly due to the positive interaction shown by the companies that operate in the different related industrial districts, such as the Varese area, where over 1000 companies producing plastic and rubber production and processing systems or components for systems operate which, in turn, are part of an industrial fabric made up of over 15,000 companies working in the mechanical equipment sector, which employs a total of 113,000 members of staff and realises a turnover of € 1.5 billion.
