ITALY EXHIBITS IN ALGERI

ITALY EXHIBITS IN ALGERI Rome (Ign) - Italy will be the guest of honour at a very important event - the 40th edition of the International Algeri Exhibition (http://en.safex-algerie.com/), which will take place from 2nd to 7th June at the Palais des Expositions in the Algerian capital. The 2006 edition saw 1635 exhibitors take part, on a total surface area of 75,000 m2. The multi-sector event is considered the most important occasion for presenting not only to the Algerian market, but also to the markets of neighbouring countries. Hence, this is an important opportunity for Italy, which on this occasion has been elected guest of honour, after being number two last year in terms of numbers of companies represented, especially in light of the growing economic exchange between the two countries.

During the first six months of 2006, the total exchange figures between Italy and Algeria reached € 5.3 billion, a 61% increase compared to the previous year, with € 954 million (+33.6%) Italian export to Algeria, making Italy the second supplier of the North African country. And the Italian Institute for Foreign Trade (ICE) is also aiming to reinforce this position with its collective participation of Italian companies, who will be able to take advantage of the occasion and Italy's special visibility in this edition, to increase their customer portfolios, also launching partnerships with local operators.

The Italian presence at the Algeri exhibition will be particularly important in the capital goods industry, with eagerly awaiting local operators in a phase of strong redevelopment of the Algerian economy. And this is an industry with a very positive current trend in Italy. According to the latest Federmacchine Ucimu (http://www.ucimu.it/) data, at the end of 2005, export of machine tools and capital goods in general had in fact grown by 14.6% compared to the previous year, reaching € 2,248 million, even better than the € 2,170 million which was an industry record in 2001. The turning point took place particularly during the second half of the year due to purchases made by Germany (11.6%), France (9%), the USA (8.4%), Spain (8%) and China (7.9%), which confirmed their status as top customers for Italian companies. Deformation machines had a particularly large effect on these positive results, with a 25.6% increase (€ 1,107.2 million), machine tools with unconventional technology, laser and electro-erosion, with a 21.5% increase (€ 128.1 million) and machine tools for removal, with a 3.8% increase.

This positive trend continued into 2006 and 2007, also on new markets: according to ISTAT data for the month of February 2007, the turnover index for capital goods increased compared to the same month in 2006, by a further 8.5%. This is, above all, the result of the increasing internationalisation of the companies in the industry, who have succeeded in approaching emerging markets. This is true, for example, for Syria, where Italian machine and capital goods exports reached the value of € 488 million in 2006, a 31.1% increase, and for many other countries close by and in North Africa.
