ITALIAN FOUNDRIES READY TO TAKE ON FENAF 2007

Brazil, Sao Paulo. The city, from the 25th to the 28th of September, will be the setting for the 12th edition of Fenaf (www.fenaf.com.br/english), considered to be the most important trade fair in South America for machinery, equipment and raw materials for the foundry industry. The event, which will take place in the Expo Center Norte, is organised every two years by Abifa, the Brazilian trade association. The 2005 edition boasted 347 exhibitors coming from 18 countries spread over an exhibition area of 16,900 square meters, i.e. about a third more than in the previous edition. The event attracted about 26,000 visitors (25,800 to be exact), up 18.9% compared to 2003. The figures may seem small, but they are significant for the sector. Furthermore, one of the outstanding characteristics of Fenaf is that it attracts a high number of industry professionals (entrepreneurs, managers, clients and technicians). In 2005 36% of visitors worked in the technical or sales departments of firms specialised in the trade, while another 22% had managerial duties.
Hoping to attract an ever bigger number of people, this year the organisers have increased the exhibition space by a further 30%, which has been already fully taken up. Exhibitors tend to be loyal to the event: over 90% of those who participated in 2005 will be present this year too. On one hand, Fenaf has acquired a global dimension and is able to attract specialised firms from all over the world. On the other, the exhibition retains a strong local connection: in the last edition 58% of visitors came from the Sao Paulo state and another 36.3% from within Brazil. Foreign visitors accounted fro 5.7% of the total. The international presence was more marked among exhibitors: 66.5% came from Brazil, but a third (33.5%) was foreign. The most represented nations were the US, Italy, Germany, the UK, France, Japan, China, India, Korea, Canada, Argentina and Mexico.
However, even if exhibitors come from all over the world, Fenaf is primarily a Brazilian event. And it could not be otherwise, since Brazil is the seventh foundry producer in the world, surpassing, according to Abifa's figures, European nations such as Spain, France and Italy. The location for Fenaf is not a coincidence, as 53% of the 13,000 firms who operate in this sector in Brazil are based in the state of Sao Paulo. In 2006 Italy exported 16.3 million euros worth of machinery and equipment for the sector, more than doubling (+130%) its 2005 figures, which showed a slight decrease compared to the previous year. Italy - together with Germany, the US and Japan - is one of the major suppliers for the Brazilian foundry industry.
Fenaf therefore is an important opportunity for Italian companies, which have a chance to strengthen or build new commercial relations with some of the most established firms in the industry, particularly those from Brazil and from the Mercosur Area in general. The Italian Trade Commission (ICE), with the objective to consolidate what is already a strong Italian presence on the local market, has organised an official delegation to the 2007 edition of the fair. Fourteen companies will take part in it, that will be assisted on the spot by ICE and AMAFOND, the trade association of the Italian foundry industry.
