PROSCIUTTI SAN DANIELE POISED TO INCREASE EXPORTS
Four hundred thousand breeders, 65 slaughterhouses, 650 employees and 31 production plants.
These are the figures of the Consortium of Prosciutto di San Daniele.
The San Daniele is a cured ham of the highest quality, which is recognized as a product with Denomination of Origin since 1970 by the Italian Government, and since 1996 by the European Union as a product with Protected Designation of Origin (PDO).
The trade mark is protected and promoted by the Consortium of Prosciutto di San Daniele, established in 1961.
2014 closed with a turnover of 330M EUR for 2.5 million hams with exports substantially stable and which account for about 13% of overall sales, mainly directed towards France, USA, Germany, Australia, Switzerland, Belgium, Austria, Russia, United Kingdom and Japan.
This business appears small but its turnover sits at a more than significant 330M EUR", explains the director of the Consorzio Mario Emilio Cichetti, who retracing in particular the history of the last years from 2012, shows the hardship brought on by the crisis, which affected in particular three companies, but that, on the whole, the industry has been able to cope reasonably well, also thanks to a mutual aid between the various businesses under the Consortium.
"In particular - he says - one of the largest companies went into voluntary liquidation. In five months, however, we bought its entire stock and sold it on the market". This allowed, among other things, to create a model of corporate crisis management thanks to the strength of a group of companies, which we hope won't be necessary again but that has proven its effectiveness.
"A mechanism marked by values, the importance of which is often overlooked, such as synergy and networking - he adds - and that emphasized the important role of the Consortia, an Italian model with a 50-year history".
"In the future - noted the Director of the Consortium - we shall move along different lines: in particular, we will continue to support the internationalization of companies, strengthening their presence in countries with consolidated operations, and developing afterwards emergency procedures, especially to enhance community and mutuality aspects".
"Regarding exports in particular - he concludes, the fact that these only represent 13% overall is connected to the usual export of non-DOP Italian hams, but also to the existence of health barriers, which require registration of export-authorized companies to access certain markets such as the US.
