U.S. & Italian Strategies for Turning Research into Business
Philadelphia, June 12-13, 2012
The Italian Trade Commission, in collaboration with the Sbarro Health Research Organization (SHRO) in Philadelphia and the Innova Consulting Group (ICG), is organizing a seminar aiming to provide an audience of both Italian and American researchers, scientists and entrepreneurs concrete tools and examples to facilitate technology transfer in Philadelphia, PA and Italy and in particular support the creation of academic and private research start-ups.
The seminar, which will take place in Philadelphia at Temple University on June 12 and 13, is part of a series of training activities promoted by the Italian Trade Commission in support of the transfer of knowledge and best practices between Italy and the United States with the goal, firstly, to stimulate the creation of spin-offs in Italy through collaboration with U.S. researchers, and, secondly, to support spin-offs in the United States generated by highly skilled Italian researchers already present in the U.S.
Topics will range from best practices in tech transfer, to potential funding opportunities (Italian, European, International), research/industry collaboration models, intellectual property, and case studies on successful initiative examples both in US and Italy.
The choice of hosting the seminar in Philadelphia stemmed precisely from the need expressed by Italian researchers working in that city to establish a consistent and effective mode of interaction with Italy, in order to build and develop technological, scientific and commercial relations. The event will be made possible thanks to the collaboration of the Sbarro Health Research Organization.
The Sbarro Health Research Organization is a nonprofit organization, chaired by Professor Antonio Giordano, an expert in the field of cancer genetics and other related diseases. The Sbarro Health Research Organization supports clinical researchers, molecular biologists, geneticists, physicists, chemists and biomathematicians studying the molecular mechanisms of cancer and other debilitating conditions. The SHRO currently holds scientific and educational cooperation agreements with various Italian organizations, including the Department of Human Pathology and Oncology, University of Siena, University of Rome "La Sapienza", University of Naples "Federico II", the Human Health Foundation and the Cancer Research Center of Mercogliano.
Sbarro is also planning to create the first Italian Accelerator in the U.S., specializing in services to support technological innovation and transfer of technologies between Italy and the United States.
The seminar will be comprised of two sessions: a training one through a series of presentations given by experts from Philadelphia and Italy; and an interactive coaching session through the organization of one-to-one meetings with participants, who will have the opportunity to individually meet speakers to expand on the topics discussed during the first day of the seminar and/or examine individual project ideas.
