ITALIAN WINE WEEK, 5TH EDITION FEBRUARY 3-9, 2016
NEW YORK, February 3, 2016: The Italian Trade Commission is pleased to announce the 5th edition of the leading Italian wine event ever staged in the United States, VINO 2016 -Italian Wine Week, which will take place this February 3- 9th. Slow Wine and Tre Bicchieri Gambero Rosso events will also be presented during the week.
Over 200 producers from key viti-cultural areas will convene for Vino at the Hilton to present over 1000 wine, spirits and craft beer labels where two full days of Grand Tastings and a dedicated Meet & Greet Expo, a section exclusively for new to market wineries seeking US representation, will serve as the event’s foundation. What is more, a series of 11 master classes, tastings, workshops and demonstrations presented by 45 award-winning industry journalists, wine experts and trade professionals who will deliver unparalleled hands-on market insight covering topics spanning US market trends, and even historical perspectives focusing on the south such as tracing the evolution wine has undergone in the Mediterranean inspired by Ulysse’s travels.
Mayor Bill De Blasio, in his mayoral proclamation, underscored the importance of VINO citing ‚ÄúDuring Italian Wine Week, we celebrate the festive spirit and good taste that define both New York and Italy‚ĶI am delighted to applaud the Italian Trade Commission, its partners, and all those associated with VINO 2016 for strengthening the ties between New York and Italy while uniting people of all backgrounds in this celebration of Italian craftsmanship. On behalf of our great city, I offer my best wishes for a wonderful event and continued success. Salute!‚ÄĚ
Italian Wine Week will conclude February 9th, with Tre Bicchieri Gambero Rosso where 190 producers will present their wines to members of the trade and press.
This year‚Äôs celebration of Italy‚Äôs wine bounty falls under the robust Italian Extraordinary Taste campaign recently launched by the Italian Trade Commission under the auspices of the Italian Ministry of Economic Development. This comprehensive campaign is the largest ever realized in the US market with activity organized in collaboration with US retailers and leading US trade shows such as the Fancy Food Show, PLMA and FMI where Italian Pavilions presented in collaboration with Cibus, TuttoFood and Vinitaly carve out an impressive show footprint. The campaign‚Äôs key US consumer message ‚ÄúBuy Authentic Italian, Get More‚ÄĚ coupled with the focus on transformation of ingredients is communicated effectively in the short film created by acclaimed Italian Director Silvio Muccino:
Trade figures for the first 11 months released by the US Department of Commerce for 2015 confirm Wines of Italy in leadership position with exports to the US boasting a 32% increase in respect to the same period last year equal to 1.427 billion dollars. Italy’s performance is bolstered in part thanks to the steady performance of Italian sparkling wines and their growing popularity in the US market registering in that category alone a 27% growth from the same period in 2014.
Event partner, Vinitaly International will partake in Italian Wine Week with a special focus on the topics of Artisanal Italian Wines and shed light on Artisanal Wines and under the radar wine varietal, Grignolino.
Maurizio Forte, Italian Trade Commissioner notes ‚ÄúVINO- Italian Wine Week has evolved into the leading industry event in the US. We have created a virtual yearly crossroad for trade, press and educators that ultimately strengthens trade relations and positively impacts both the US consumer and perception of Italian wine in America.‚ÄĚ
Stevie Kim, Managing Director of Vinitaly International comments ‚ÄúVinitaly International Academy made its debut in New York exactly two years ago. We are honored and pleased to partake in VINO and present two exclusive seminars that address noteworthy topics such as Grignolino (one of Italy‚Äôs 500 indigenous grapes) and the strategic importance of Artisanal Wines (the heart and soul of Italian Wine Production). The American market has for a long time been one of the leading if not the most important wine market where our efforts are aimed at the promotion of Italian Wine education. This event serves as a great occasion to recruit new candidates for our Italian Wine Ambassador program, now in its second edition.‚ÄĚ
The Press conference of February 3rd at the Highline Ballroom will kick off Italian Wine Week 2016 with an exciting panel discussion featuring Maurizio Forte, Stevie Kim, Kevin Zraly and David Rosengarten. Together they will offer insight on the evolution of the US wine market and the future of Italian Wines in the US market. Following the Press Conference, Slow Wine will present a grand tasting featuring 80 Italian producers from all over the peninsula.
