Company Strengths
R&D CAPACITY:
Sardinia plays a leading role in the biotech sector, that shows broad expansion potential. According to a recent report by Blossom-Assobiotec, Sardinia is sixth among Italian regions for number of biotech companies and first among those of Southern Italy. This thanks to different factors:
  • genetic drift phenomena (the so-called genetic isolates), the result of thousands of years of geographical isolation, which makes Sardinia the ideal place for the identification of the genetic causes of complex diseases and the risk factors associated with them;
  • the presence of highly qualified local researchers and technicians in ICT and Life Sciences, strongly oriented to interaction, two local universities, National Research Council Institutes, several public and private research centres;
  • "state of the art":infrastructures such as the Science & Technology Park
  • The investments by local authorities for R&D activities.
These policies have concretely produced a Biomedicine and Health Technology District, one of the only two Italian Technology Districts officially recognized by the Ministry of University and Research, and the creation of a pole of excellence for bioinformatic technologies for personalized medicine. The Sardinia local government has recently set up a new public company, called "Phase One" (Fase Uno). The aim of "Phase One" is to contribute to the development of a local strategy and successively national strategy for preclinical evaluation and patent evaluation of new substances biologically active to be brought in clinic Phase I and II. The activities will focus on the development of new drugs, new therapeutic applications, technology transfer of know how and procedures and finally assistance for the development, registration, production and commercialization of therapeutic and diagnostic products. The new company will also be able to provide the necessary support to pharmaceutical companies to develop and test, in Sardinia, their own products up to the clinical phase necessary for the registration of a new drug.
