COMFORT AND ENERGY SAVINGS WITH SOLARIS SCREENS
Energy savings, comfort, individually tailored and highly innovative solutions: the solar screening produced by Solaris, a company from the Veneto, includes all these different features, significantly expanding the concept of the sun blind. As a result, this relatively young company, established in 1999 and based in Due Carrare, in the province of Padua , can now boast an annual turnover of about two million Euros, and is recognised at international level as a business which can resolve complex problems very rapidly, providing innovative and individually designed solutions.
This is just what happened in the context of the Winter Olympics in Sochi, when Solaris was called in urgently to solve a problem which had emerged on the slopes in Krasnaja Poljana: a commission based on the fact that the company had already produced a solution for the Cesana Pariol bobsled run, used during the Turin Games of 2006.
The screening originally created for the Sochi event was ineffective in maintaining the firmness of the ice. Solaris therefore set about designing, building and finally mounting a system of sun screens for the bobsled, luge and skeleton runs; all completed within the space of just a few months.
The operation involved mounting 830 roller blinds, all with their own protective aluminium boxes, to shelter the exposed side of the slope: a distance of about 1850 metres.
The blinds themselves were made from high tenacity polyester coated with PVC, able to withstand the cold and persistent wind of the mountain climate and to respond to the extreme weather conditions of the area.
The blinds, in fact, had a dual role: on the one hand, to protect the slope from the fierce rays of the sun, and on the other, to confront the extremely low temperatures, which could reach minus 30 degrees, and snowstorms and winds of up to 50 kilometres an hour. In this way, the solar screens provided a way of ensuring that the ice was sufficiently firm for every event in the competition, while avoiding the use of excessive energy to maintain the surface of the run.
They also prevented exposure of the course to snow and strong winds, which could have created problems for the athletes during their descent.
All this has been made possible for this Veneto-based company thanks to huge investments in innovation over recent years, enabling the development of highly personalised projects. In this context, the business has worked with the Polytechnic University of Turin as its academic partner, researching the best solutions from the ergonomic standpoint, and also collaborated with ENEA to focus on the energy saving aspect. For example, in the case of company premises or offices still to be occupied, it is quite possible to calculate which materials can best ensure the wellbeing and safety of the personnel while also optimising energy use.
Innovation and personalised solutions, especially at the higher end of the market, have made Solaris the chosen partner for such projects as the Montpellier Public Library building, designed by Zaha Hadid, the new premises of the Bocconi University in Milan, the headquarters of Armani and Bulgari in Rome, and the exhibition centres in Verona and Milan.
