Main Activity
The innovative strategy of Target Heart Biotec is based on the discovery of Melusin, a muscle specific protein, with key function in triggering increased muscular power (compensatory cardiac hypertrophy) when heart is subjected to exceptional work load. This project stems from the research work developed in the past years at the Department of Genetics, Biology and Biochemistry of the University of Torino in collaboration with the Department of Experimental Medicine of the University of Rome "La Sapienza" in which it has been demonstrated that increasing melusin levels in the heart by transgene expression, leads to the activation of a compensatory hypertrophy program and prevents heart failure (Brancaccio et al. Nat. Med. 2003; 9:68-75; De Acetis et al. Circ. Res. 2005; 96:1087-94). An International patent has been deposited covering the ability of Melusin to prevent heart failure in pre-clinical animal models.
The goals of the Target Heart research project are to develop a recombinant form of melusin capable to penetrate inside the cells and induce an hypertrophy response in cardiomyocytes, both in vitro and in vivo in pre-clinical animal model of heart failure.
