Main Activity
Although founded only 80 years ago, the Università degli Studi di Milano is one of Italy's largest, with a population of 2500 faculty members and researchers and over 60,000 students. Multidisciplinary research is conducted by nine schools offering 127 undergraduate, 76 PhD and 36 masters degree programs. The University is noted for its outstanding scientific performance, which is one of the reason why it is the only Italian member of the LERU, a prestigious league of 12 leading R&D oriented European universities. The University plays a proactive role in the development of scientific and economic networks and opportunities by collaborating widely with other scientific institutions. Nearly 300 research contracts with national and international companies are signed every year, indicating the broad scope of strategies to bring the University's know-how potential to market.
Strong in the pharmaceuticals, life sciences and biotech, technical and chemical devices and agro-food sectors, the University's patent portfolio has seen a significant growth in the last three years, as have the 15 spin off companies created by university researchers to exploit their know-how. Centers of excellence in the fields of neurodegenerative diseases, nanotechnologies and technology platforms for drug development complete the picture. In 2006, one of the Univeristy spin off awarded the prize "Techno Scouting per BioIniziativa from research to enterprise" in Lombardy. The University participates to several initiatives and competitions promoting the transformation of business ideas in organized enterprise.
Furthermore the University is working at the constitution of an Incubator for biotechnology and biomedicine, as a place where to combine research, scientific know-how and business.
