TECNOLOGY AND INNOVATION: ITALIAN MACHINE TOOLS MAKE THEIR DEBUT IN VIET NAM

The debut of Italian machine tool producers in Viet Nam has been subject to very careful preparation, in order to showcase the best the sector has to offer in terms of technology and innovation. Viet Nam only started to expand its industrial production and manufacturing base in 2008, reducing the importance of agriculture to its economy. An Italian delegation is visiting the Mta Viet Nam 2010 Fair, to be held from July 6th – 9th at the Saigon Exhibition &Convention Center in Ho Chi Minh City.
The Italian Trade Commission, together with sector’s association, Ucimu- Production Systems, is coordinating a collective made up of 11 industrial companies. The firms will each occupy one of the special mini-stands in the Italian pavilion, and will try to attract the attention of visitors and workers, making the most of their first visit to a country which is becoming one of the most dynamic in Asia. The aim will be to reinforce the positive trend already seen during 2009: Italian sales of machine tools to Viet Nam last year showed an encouraging rise (+13%), reaching a total of 6.8 million Euros. With their participation in events such as Mta Viet Nam, the delegates hope to do even better. The last edition of the fair produced some impressive figures: 226 exhibitors from 21 different countries attended the exhibition, which was spread over a huge area (5,550 square metres). This success has made Italian companies aware of the importance of taking part and, above all, of producing innovative products.
But what, in real terms, will the Italian pavilion have to offer visitors? Grinding machines for huge crankshafts measuring from 1 to 12.5 metres in length, a new Multiflex integrated multi-bar cutting system with elevated automation, plus machinery for laser marking, laser welding and incision. These are just a few examples of the innovative machine tool products to have come out of Italy in recent years. A total of 28,560 workers are employed in this sector, which includes about 450 companies. The main export market is Germany (with a quota equivalent to 14.5% of production), followed by China (8.2%) and then the USA (7.3%). Italy’s principal competitors at world level are virtually all the nations of the Asian continent, including Viet Nam itself. Japan occupies first position (with a market quota of 4.8%), but China (8.5%), and Taiwan (3.7%) are also important contributors. It is no accident, therefore, that the first visit by Italian companies to Ho Chi Minh City should take place this year. They will bring with them a portfolio of distinctive attributes which mark them out as truly original players on the global scene. Their structure, for example, in contrast to Japanese or German companies, is that of the small or medium-sized business (employing an average of 70 workers), typically managed directly by the owner, who also takes personal charge of exports.
