CEBIT 2007: THE MEETING POINT FOR TECHNOLOGIES OF THE FUTURE

Rome (Ign) - It is the most important and largest ICT fair in the world. A record achieved gradually, over the course of 21 editions, and which also this year will be a fundamental appointment for EU and international professionals and visitors. We are talking about CeBit 2007 in Hannover (http://www.cebit.de/), the hi-tech show that will open its doors on 15 March and until the 21st will be the meeting point for the most sophisticated and innovative products that electronics and IT can currently offer. CeBit is now an event of worldwide importance. During the last edition there were 430,000 visitors, a quarter from 70 different non-EU countries. The market segments most represented were Voip, Open Source, HDTV, security, digital imaging, RFID, telematics and navigation. This year the organisers predict that there will be around half a million visitors. This is the backdrop to the initiative of the Italian Institute for Foreign Trade (ICE), which will support the Italian presence at CeBit with an Italy System, hosted in the Future Park Pavilion, to which will be dedicated an entire day within the Future Talk program (a marketing initiative allowing participating Italian companies to present their examples of technological innovation).
The Italian IT market is in constant growth. In 2006, according to research by Eito (the European Information Technology Observatory), turnover in the sector recorded results of +2% achieving levels of €70bn. In 2007, further growth of 2.1%, is expected, which will take levels up to €72bn. This growth is due above all to the segments of hardware, software, professional services and support services. In particular, Italy distinguishes itself in Europe for its huge PC market, especially in terms of notebooks, and exponential growth in this sector is expected especially for the current year.
Moreover, in the sector of services, the new technologies are proving to be excellent business, above all because the fields of application are not yet consolidated, leaving a great deal of space for companies that want to try to enter the market. A case in point is Voip (Voice Over Internet Protocol, the remote voice transmission system via web), designed for private customers, but which is increasingly being adopted by companies. According to research carried out by IOSI-Bocconi, Italtel and Cisco, the Internet telephone protocol has already convinced 16.8% of companies with over 10 employees, and of these as many as 50% intended to entirely replace their traditional telephone system with an Internet system, to save costs and make databases more easily consulted, standardising production systems and making corporate communication faster.
A similar situation is found with open source. As far as regards free software, Italy saw growth of 1.7% in 2006, with a tendency for further growth in the early months of 2007 (+2.5%). These figures are destined to grow further, considering the increasing attention world markets dedicate to such software, which is gradually being adopted not only by companies, but by public administrations, thanks above all to the low license costs. This, then, is a market which is bound to see exponential growth, also thanks to the activity of numerous organisations that have developed in this field, such as the CIRS (Consortium Italicum Ratione Soluta - www.consorziocirs.it), which offers companies packaged solutions based on a series of non proprietary applications.
