MUSIKMESSE: THE ITALIAN SOUND WILL DELIGHT THE WORLD'S EARS

Rome (Ign) - For the Italian builders of musical instruments, it is one of the most important promotional events, and a large number of companies will also be present this year. Musikmesse in Frankfurt (http://musik. messefrankfurt.com/), is in fact the biggest worldwide fair in the sector, now in its 28th edition, which will take place from 28 to 31 March, 2007, becoming, like every year, the meeting point for innovation and tradition in contemporary music. Last year the show recorded 101,000 visitors and 1561 exhibitors from 51 countries, naturally including Italy, that will take part in this edition with a collective participation of 30 companies, organized by Acisa, the Association of Italian Musical Instrument Builders, and by the Italian Institute for Foreign Trade (ICE).
The Italian enterprises in the sector, which in 2006 occupied third place in the list of exhibiting countries, after Germany and the United States, in fact represent an absolute benchmark on the international market. Above all, because Italian stringed-instrument production boasts a centuries-old tradition dating back to the Renaissance, which became famous all over the world thanks to the workshops and craft schools that developed above in Cremona (Lombardy). The city was home to, amongst others, the workshops of Antonio Stradivari and Giuseppe Guarneri, probably the greatest lute-players in history. Also in Bologna several lute-players were already active at the end of the 15th century. Today in these two towns it is still an important sector of the local economy, as in Florence and in large part of Tuscany. Characterized by strong national and international influences, reworked using a particular artistic style and rare craftsmanship, the Tuscan school has always been recognized for its stylistic quality, expressed in the various construction methods and materials used in the many workshops. Moreover, the whole productive area of Castelfidardo has now become an industrial district, and was historically one of the places where the first enterprises in the sector were set up, Nowadays it covers a fairly large area, between the provinces of Ancona and Macerata, in Marche. The most famous product in this area was for a long time the accordion, and local businesses were leaders on a worldwide level, although the district later also managed to diversify activity with the production of guitars, organs and pianos. Today, the productive fabric comprises 400 companies providing 3000 jobs and an export share of about 50%.
The Italian enterprises in the sector of musical instruments have always managed to combine tradition and innovation. And today the range of Italian products offers both instruments in the strict sense, such as pianos (traditional and digital), organs and harpsichords, portable keyboards, synths (keyboard and modulo), sequencers and modulos, acoustic and electrical guitars, accordions, wind and bowed instruments, as well as associated products: amplifiers for instruments and the voice, recorders, software for music notation and management, accessories and teaching applications. In 2005 the Italian instrument market was worth €350m, up 2.1% on the previous year. In Italy almost a million pieces were sold, mostly at the top end of the market, where many producers have focused in recent years, which find themselves in the enviable situation of having combined cultural tradition and technology.
