CONSTRUCTION AND MATERIALS: ITALIAN EXCELLENCE IN ALGIERS

Rome (Ign) - the industrial system of the construction industry will take centre stage at Batimatec 2007, the show dedicated to construction technology, materials and components, (www.safex-algerie.com), scheduled to take place in Algiers between 3 and 8 May. This is a specialised fair which is becoming increasingly popular in the regions of northern Africa and which in 2006 covered 18,000 square metres of exhibition space, with over 600 direct exhibitors, of which around a half were from abroad. There are two reasons which make this occasion extremely important for the many Italian businesses that occupy a position of leadership in many divisions of the sector. In the first place, the consolidated presence in Algeria of major Italian companies in the sector of public works (Condotte, Astaldi, Vianini, Todini, CMC and others) and in that of components and materials for construction (cement, binders, plumbing, facings). Secondly, the fact that in 2006 Batimatec increased its exhibition space to provide an area dedicated to the quarrying industry and stone working, a sector in which Italian businesses hold a position of absolute international leadership. And, precisely to provide increased visibility, the Italian Institute for Foreign Trade (ICE) has organised a Punto Italia for the forthcoming edition of Batimatec.
Italian companies in the sector of stone working machinery and technology are going through an extremely positive period. An example of this is the growth in Italian equipment for the working of marble, which according to figures issued by the Assomarmomacchine Research Centre (http://www.assomarmomacchine.com), in the first half of 2006 grew by 14.54%, corresponding to turnover of over €400m realised on all the major international marketplaces. This trend towards recovery is due above all to the growth of purchases from the main buyers, on average estimated at 25%. In detail, the main customers of Italian industries producing stone technologies are the United States, which made purchases worth over € 50m (+26.2%), Spain, which is showing a growing appreciation of Italian machinery, and went from €28m of purchases in the first half of 2005 to over €37m in 2006 (+31.1%). In third place is India, which almost doubled its purchases (+91.7%), reaching levels of investment of over €34m. The boom in Russia should also be mentioned, which with its +43.2% jumped up three positions, arriving in sixth place in the league table of Italy's main customers.
This success is due essentially to the wide experience Italian businesses in the sector have developed, placing them at the international forefront . A case in point is boring and drilling machinery, whose exports, in volumes of sales, practically doubled in 2006 compared to 2005. Machinery for the subsequent processing of stone have also increased their presence on foreign markets, such as the special machine called the "Mole", which is used to hone, brighten, polish, or cut stone materials, or the new cutting systems which make it possible to improve the use of diamonds to cut hard stone. These are all products whose strong points are represented by technological innovation, a constant effort to improve quality, and which, thanks to the promotion of Batimatec, will be able to reach new markets.
