ITALY IN GERMANY FOR LEADERSHIP IN TECHNICAL TEXTILES

Rome (Ign) - Italian companies are leaders in the sector of technical fabrics and the machines for their production. And their presence at the next edition of TechTextil (http://techtextil.messefrankfurt.com/frankfurt/de/), scheduled to take place in Frankfurt between 12 and 14 June 2007, is bound to be of prime importance. TechTextil is in fact one of the most important European events dedicated to textiles machinery. The last edition of the Frankfurt show saw 1075 exhibitors from 47 countries and no fewer than 22,656 trade professionals. Italy will be present with an Italy Point organised by the Italian Institute for Foreign Trade (ICE), in collaboration with TexClubTec (www.texclubtec.it), the Association of Technical Textiles, while the Italian manufacturers of textiles machinery will number 35, including seven hosted in an Italy Meeting Point also organised by ICE.
The attention dedicated to TechTextil by Italian businesses reflects the interest in a sector in continuous growth (www.acimit.it). In 2006, the value of Italian production of textiles machinery grew by 4% on the previous year, achieving levels of €2.68 billion. A similar increase was seen for exports, whose value at €2.1 billion was 3% higher than in 2005. The solid results in the main Asian markets were confirmed with China and India at the forefront, the main recipients of Italian foreign sales, accounting for around 30% of exports. Last year was also characterised by an overall increase in sales to some secondary markets (Latin America and Africa) and by recovery on the domestic market (+9%).
As far as regards the sectors of technical fabrics, those for particular uses (protection from atmospheric agents, fabrics for farming and building work, health care and hospital use, industrial use, and military applications), Italian industry can count on 200 companies, providing 6000 jobs, for business worth €1.5 billion, mainly realised on foreign markets. Technical textiles are assuming an increasingly large relative weight in the wider sector of fabrics, above all for those applications that require greater technological development. A case in point is clothing for astronauts designed for zero gravity conditions, to be worn under their suits, which is produced by a company in Biella -situated in one of Europe's most important textiles districts and specialised in by medical applications. Another application context for technical textiles is the TIMaT project (Innovative Technologies for Textiles Materials) funded by the Regional Council of Lombardy, which uses all the possible synergies between research centres and businesses through programmes and projects coordinated on a local level. The aim is to propose new technologies to companies in the sector and create a network of excellence in the field.
