BORSA VINI ITALIANI 2017

23rd February 2017 – Embassy of Italy Vienna

ICE is now involved in “Piano Export Sud”, an initiative designed to enable the enterprises and research systems of Italy’s so-called Convergence Regions - Campania, Calabria, Puglia and Sicilia – to express their full potential for innovation and excellence.

For this reason we have the pleasure to present wine producing companies from Campania, Calabria, Puglia and Sicilia.

Campania’s average annual wine production of 185 million litres (9th in volume among the regions) includes 16% DOC/DOCG and 15% IGT. Red wine accounts for 57% of Campania’s production. It’s become increasingly evident why the ancient Romans admired Campania Felix as the most felicitous of wine regions. Over the last decade, the region of Naples has dramatically improved the quality of its modern wines, now classifying about a third of the production as DOC or IGT. Evidence of the new era is the elevation of three ancient wines to the elite category of DOCG: Taurasi, Fiano di Avellino and Greco di Tufo. The Romans favoured the vineyards along the coast north of Naples where Falernian, the most treasured wine of the empire, was grown. They also praised the wines of volcanic Vesuvius and the wooded hills of Avellino. Even earlier, the Greeks had recognised the privileged nature of the place, introducing vines which still stand today in Aglianico, Greco and Falanghina. In Campania a majority of producers strives to make the most of native vines, including an honour roll of so-called “archaeological varieties” which do indeed date back to antiquity. The noblest of red varieties is Aglianico, which makes the red Taurasi, as well as the red Falerno del Massico and others. Greco, a name applied to various vines prominent in the south, reaches heights in Greco di Tufo. Falanghina, which seems to have been the base of the white version of Falernian, has become the region’s fastest spreading variety. Campania’s DOC zones also include the fabled islands of Capri and Ischia, as well as the recently revived Peninsola Sorrentina and Costa d’Amalfi. The recent region wide IGT of Campania, which applies to red, white and rose’ wines and nine native varietals, has rapidly increased the quantity of classified wine from a region that is fast gaining in prestige in Italy and abroad.

CANTINE MEDITERRANEE

Our company is based on a guaranteed, certified quality system: a tradition that dates back to 1946, and a diversity of tastes and organoleptic characteristics, which our consumers appreciate when tasting some of the most valuable products of the Campania tradition, wines that range from DOP to IGP and DOCG.

Moreover, Cantine Mediterranee is the only company in Campania, and is one of the few Italian companies to produce certified ‘kosher’ wines.

MONTESOLE

MONTESOLE Winery was founded in 1990 from a family tradition. The winery is located on the picturesque hills of Montefusco, between Irpinia and Sannio, which are the most developed vine-growing districts in Campania. Fertile clay-calcareous soils of volcanic origin, vineyards with excellent solar exposure and altitude, indigenous vine species derived from ancient Latin and Greek roots, all combine to produce the unique natural environment of this locality. Spumanti (Italian high quality sparkling wine) is produced entirely in our cellar from local grapes, and is our particular achievement, the fruit of continuous research and technological innovations by our specialists. Today, MONTESOLE is among the largest private-owned wineries in Campania, with a potential storage capacity of 45,000 hl and a current capacity of 25,000 hl. The Cantina features glycol-cooled stainless steel tanks for protecting and refining white wines, pressure tanks (autoclavi) for Spumanti, oak casks, barrels and barriques for aging and refining red wines, and an automatic bottling unit as well as our own laboratory, which is particularly useful for pre/post-production quality checkups.

ROMEO DE CICCO

This Campanian estate is located in Casalduni in the Benevento province, close to the Taburno massif where local briganti (brigands), engaged in bloody clashes with official Italian troops during the years after Italian independence and unity. These brigands were often former Bourbon officers and soldiers, who had been defeated by the kingdom of Piedmont and Savoy, leading to national unity in 1861.

FROM GERMANY TO SANNIO

Meeting Toni and Romeo De Cicco is like traveling back in time to the beginnings of this territory; more to the point, it’s about returning to the homeland and the soil, after years of emigration in Germany (the brothers were born and raised in Dortmund by their modest, hard working parents while the land was owned and cultivated by their grandparents).

Just talk to the two brothers and you will learn that this corner of Sannio is always present in their minds, even when the conversation moves on to trendier topics. The spiritual presence of Sannio is possibly an untouchable asset, but it is always there, underlying a state of mind, instead of simply being a place where many historical misdeeds took place, which are often unknown to those who have turned their back on that period, maybe preferring a more accommodating vision of the past. When Toni and Romeo talk about wine, their wine, they do not skimp the historical details, and they are not boring at all. They are not remotely like old school farmers, since they are well traveled and have a modern vision of their business with a quality-driven approach: “Making wine doesn’t translate automatically into selling your beloved wine, the fruit of your relentless efforts”.

ORGANIC MOVEMENT

Toni and Romeo are more than just two forty-something brothers with outgoing personalities, who can entertain folk for hours. Back in 2004, when the newly-established estate released its first vintage on the market, they chose to work with an organic certification. This was not merely an aspect of their philosophical vision, but a donation to future generations by preserving the integrity of the land and territory. A few years later, the two brothers saw no need to regret this option as they have always considered it the only way to raise the quality of their production. Right now, the Terra di Briganti estate is engaged in a biodynamic certification process, strictly regulated by Demeter.

Calabria’s average annual production of 47 million litres (16th in volume among the regions) includes 19% DOC and 13% IGT. Red wine accounts for 89% of Calabria’s production. Calabria, which forms the toe of the Italian boot, is a predominantely mountainous region with marked variations in microclimates between the sunny coastal hills along the Ionian and Tyrrhenian seas and the chilly heights of Aspromonte massifs. Two grape varieties of Greek origin dominate – Gaglioppo in red wines and Greco in whites. Calabria’s best known wine is Ciro’, which grows on low hills along the Ionian coast between the ancient Greek cities of Sybaris and Kroton (Sibari and Crotone today). Local legend has it that Ciro’ descended directly from Krimia, the wine Calabrian athletes drank to celebrate victory in an early Olympiad. Lately Ciro’ has taken on contemporary touches as new methods of vine-training and temperature-controlled winemaking have diminished the alcoholic strength, making the wine rounder, fuller in fruit and fresher in bouquet. The classic Ciro’ is red, which in the Riserva version has the capacity to age beyond a decade from certain vintages. There is also a rosato and a bianco from Greco grapes. Melissa, an adjacent DOC zone, makes red and white wines similar to Ciro’, but red wines from the same Gaglioppo grown at higher altitudes such as Pollino, Donnici and Savuto are lighter in body and colour. The dark Greco Nero variety is also used in certain reds of Calabria. Among the whites, the rare Greco di Bianco stands out as an exquisite but increasingly rare sweet wine; from a local variety of Greco, it has a rich, velvety texture with a citruslike bouquet. The nearly identical Greco di Gerace is a non-DOC wine that carries the ancient place name. From the same area comes Mantonico di Bianco, a Sherry-like amber wine with hints of almond and citrus in bouquet and flavour.

AGRICOLA BRIGHA

On the Ionian coast of Calabria, on the summit of a mountain that dominates the entire valley, lies Bova, or Vua in Greek. This town is considered to be the cultural capital of minority cultures in Greek Calabria. It is in this context that the native grapes of Nerello Calabrese are grown to produce the Ambeli, Scerò, Maras and Fengari wines.

CANTINA MALENA SOC. COOP. AGRICOLA

In Calabria, the Malena family name has long been associated with magnificent wines. The Malena winery is based in Cirò Marina and was started by Grandfather Cataldo (1909-1994) who, when he was just eighteen years old, started his passionate adventure inside an old cellar that was located in the Cutura del Marchese district of Cirò Marina. His passion and commitment gave birth to a wine that has grown from a small batch production to a distinguished vineyard. Cataldo's son Francesco has contributed to the growth and development of the business. Nowadays, the vineyard is helmed by Francesco and his brother Antonio. They are driven by their strong entrepreneurial vision and their main objective is to combine their revived traditional wine-making heritage with modern wine production processes.

CANTINA MASICEI

This company, founded in 2012, takes its name, Masicei, from the location where the first vineyard was planted, to the west of Brattirò (Calabria). Since ancient times, the hills and terraces of this pleasant village, which lies between Capo Vaticano and Tropea, have always been highly suited to the cultivation of grapes and the production of excellent wines, thanks to the excellent soil and climatic conditions: sunshine, a mild climate and sea breezes, create unique flavors in the wine.

The winery’s philosophy is rooted in a great respect for the land and the use of appropriate cultivation techniques, involving the agronomic management of the vineyards which respond to a rigorous, and disciplined organic production. No treatments, no synthetic chemicals, no fertilizers.

This is a form of viticulture that manages the plants in a natural way, by taking measures to avert risks and finding the most appropriate cultivation solutions to achieve its objective and produce quality, healthy and perfectly ripe grapes.

Inside our company, it feels just like it did in the past. The whole place retains the essence of its rural existence and lifestyle, simply to honor and continue our ancestors’ work through the generations.

The winemaking process is conducted using natural methods that best express the true value of the land, its vineyards and wine producers.

Puglia’s average annual wine production of 700 million litres (2nd in volume among the regions) includes about 12% DOC and 19% IGT. Red and Rose’ wines account for slightly more than half of Puglia’s production. Puglia is now bringing its wines to a new high standard of quality. Knowns as the ‘cellar of Italy’, it produces wines that have been well known since ancient times (circa 7-8th century B.C.), the time of Magna Graecia. Under the Romans, Apulia wines were exported around the civilised world. In the days of the Renaissance, Lorenzo il Magnifico found them most acceptable, and after the French

occupation of Italy, huge quantities were shipped to France. In recent years the region has seen a large-scale renovation of its wine sector. Steady improvement in quality along with an increase in quantity of classified wine (including the six IGT categories) has led to a growing reputation for wines widely appreciated for value abroad. Puglia can be divided roughly in two viticultural sectors by a hypothetical line crossing the region between Brindisi and Taranto. To the north, the terrain consists of plains and rolling hills where the climate is temperate. Dry wines from this area tend to have moderate strength, with impressive fruit, good acidity and ample bouquet. Red wines generally derive from the native Uva di Troia or Bombino Nero, as well as Montepulciano and Sangiovese. White wines are dominated by the Verdeca variety, though Bianco d’Alessano, Malvasia, Trebbiano and Bombino Bianco are also evident. South of the Brindisi – Taranto line lies Salento, a peninsula of low, rolling hills that extends between the Adriatic and Ionian seas to the easternmost point of Italy. Though hot, Salento is not quite torrid, thanks to the play of sea currents and breezes that waft across the Adriatic from the Balkans. Salento’s traditional wines were the powerful, inky reds from Primitivo, Negroamaro and Malvasia Nera, but increasing attention is being given to fresher reds and rosés􀀀, as well as to some unexpectedly bright and fruity white wines.

CAIAFFA VINI

Loving your own land means taking care of it. All we do is farm organically, trying not to alter the extraordinary relationship between plants and insects, which work with us day by day, helping us achieve a better soil quality and supporting a natural growth process, in order to obtain healthy plants and extraordinary grapes. This is how the Caiaffa family shares the authentic flavour of the land with you. Over 25 hectares of vines, located in Cerignola (Apulia), surrounded by the sea and the Murge hills, where the peculiar climate, soil and nature dictate their own rate of growth. This is how grapes become wine, and how the cycle of natural growth shows the evidence of its reciprocal love.

MASCA DEL TACCO

The “Masca del Tacco” Company was founded in 2010 by Armando and Felice Mergè, but its origins are much older. Back in 1949, the Laviano family established their “Cantina di Erchie”. The company is located in Erchie, in the northern part of the Salento peninsula, and includes 50 hectares of land, which are pruned in alberello and espalier shapes, with a few remaining acres still alberello. These are lands that endure, and enjoy the heat of the earth and the influence of the beautiful sea around the Salento peninsula. The land is still worked by the farmers who have always been here, and who have owned it and managed it for years, and have harvested the grapes with their hands, passing to it the love they feel for the earth and its fruits. Thus was born the Masca Tacco Company, history, values, and innovation.

RIA VITICOLTORI

In the lands of Apulia, among farms, olive groves and vineyards, is where Ria Viticoltori is located. Its history dates back to 1880. The wine-making activity, passed from father to son, has its roots in the Ria family’s culture and passion. Ever since then, in the ancient area of Magna Grecia, the family has cultivated Apulia’s autochthonous vines on Casale Cirillo land. Although it started as a production and bulk wine sales business, in recent decades it has undergone a great evolution. The fourth generation has introduced a massive change. The new guidelines aimed at restricting production, by focusing on vinification and bottling a few thousand bottles in order to improve the quality. The fifth and current generation consists of two brothers, Carmine and Giuseppe, who have adopted and taken on this vision of modern viticulture, and are living out their shared vocation. Their presence has given the farm extra vitality and fizz. Ria Viticoltori can now rely, not only on the experience that has been handed down, but also on the vitality and resourcefulness of the new generation. The company now cultivates about 14 hectares, at 250 metres above sea level. The vineyards are all cultivated using the guyot method and are characterized by low yields, with an average age of 20 years.

Azienda Agricola “San Ruggiero” is located on the site where the Greek hero Diomedes is said to have founded Troia Nova using the stones that remained after the war that led to the fall and destruction of the mythical city of Troy; in an eternal reminder of his gesture, Diomedes planted some vines in those very fields. The Winery was built in 2012 in line with bio-architectural principles and respect for the surrounding environment; likewise, grape-picking and wine production follow the ancient traditions. The vineyard was originally planted about 60 years ago; it has now been inherited by Dr Ruggiero Tupputi, a radiologist with a passion for growing high quality vines. He has taken to producing this noble indigenous grape variety in a winery that his family has owned since early 1800s. It is an unirrigated vineyard with guyot-trained vines, the grapes are picked manually, and the fermentation process takes place inside steel vats, in a thermo-regulated environment.

SANTI DIMITRI AZIENDA AGRICOLA

The origins of the Vallone family’s estate can be traced back to the end of the 17th century, when Angelo Vallone began acquiring land in Terra d’Otranto, the area known nowadays as Salento. Three centuries later, Vincenzo Vallone launched the Santi Dimitri brand with the aim of preserving the cultural and entrepreneurial heritage of the old family business by focusing all efforts on quality production through extensive research and a careful selection of grape varieties. Recently, the vineyards have been re-zoned in order to ensure that ultimately, only the best grapes make it to the bottle. New agricultural protocols have been introduced to fine-tune the production process, and respect the needs of the plants – in other words, ‘listen’ to them and further reduce chemicals at all stages of production. Over three hundred years of passion and commitment, and the work goes on ...

SCHOLA SARMENTI

Founded in 1999, Schola Sarmenti produces great wines from native vineyards such as Fiano, Negroamaro, Primitivo and Susumaniello, which are a wonderful expression of the Salento terroir. The winery is proud of its vineyards of excellence, some of which are located very close to the sea, and are managed organically using ancient methods that respect the cycle of nature, avoiding synthetic products and in total harmony with the surrounding landscape. A multitude of old, small head-truck vines aged up to 80 tell a tale, and are the true soul of Schola Sarmenti. The Winery has, since its very beginning, chosen its goal: that of preserving an ancient training system called Alberello Pugliese. An important choice, as this technique is so difficult and so precious that only strong, expert and able hands are capable of crafting high quality, high prestige wines. During harvesting, each bunch of grapes is picked manually and carefully selected on a very modern sorting table while clean technology extracts the precious juice from each grape. Science and patience are applied with wisdom, with the latest innovative machines and silent oak barrels contributing to craft the unique collection of wines that Schola Sarmenti is so proud of. Their excellent quality is confirmed by the awards and prizes from all over the world that they have gained. Gold medals at the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles, at Expovinia of Zurich, together with some of the higher evaluations assigned to Apulian wines by Bibenda and Robert Parker, are just a few examples. In particular, Nerìo Riserva 2012 was evaluated by Wine Spectator and listed as one of the Top 100 Wines of the World.

TENUTA MARANO

Tenuta Marano is a new company, founded in Guagnano, a small city in the heart of the ’land of Negroamaro’, as the result of a love story between this land and a Campania businessman called Salvatore Marano. A liaison that has been going on for over thirty years, inducing him to give himself completely to this land that has been made prosperous by sun, wind and two seas, to build up a business that is capable of exalting this territory, and of supplying the taste of excellence in every glass and in every sip the flavor of love. This route has led to a high-quality production, which respects the specificity and sustainability of a land that is so extraordinarily rich in natural beauties, and is too often forgotten. A production which blends tradition and innovation, from the vine to the bottle, thereby ensuring excellent quality and achieving a natural balance in the environment. Our company’s mission is the production of top quality wines through careful checks and certificated productive processes, to help the growth and development of a land that returns the love shown by these newcomers without hesitation. Our production is 100% rooted in the territory we belong to, as we only grow autochthonous grapes and seek a close synergetic cooperation with other companies, nearby. Our company properties include vineyards of about 15 hectares, mostly located in the heart of the ‘terre del Negroamaro’. Among these are two very old gems ‘Alberello pugliese’ vineyards: ‘il marchesani’ near Guagnano, planted with Negroamaro vines that are over 55 years old, which gives life to our first cru, Tama, Salice Salentino DOP riserva; the other old vineyard is located between Manduria and Avetrana, with an average age of 60 years, and it produces Primitivo di Manduria grapes which give life to our second cru, called Centovite, Primitivo di Manduria DOP. Thirteen winery labels. In addition to the two cru, our production includes eleven more references, obtained mostly from the Negroamaro grapes which are used differently as a blend or in purity (sparkling, white, red or rosè), one more Primitivo, a white wine from Verdeca and another from Chardonnay.

TENUTA PATRUNO PERNIOLA

Tenuta Patruno Perniola was founded at the beginning ot the 19th century near Gioia Del Colle, right at the centre of the Murgia terroir, in the middle of Apulia. The beating heart of the estate, certified 100% organic, is represented by the historical family ‘masseria’ (manor farm). It has recently been refurbished and is now an agro-tourism hotel. The passion for winemaking that has been handed down through several generations preserves and enriches the features of the most important local wine variety: Primitivo di Gioia del Colle. The vineyard is cured with traditional techniques and exposed to sun, wind flow, and important thermal excursions. This landscape is called the ’Red Lands‘, a calcareous soil that is rich in ferrous minerals that give the soil its typical rusty colour. The grapes are carefully selected; our cellar treatments are never invasive and do not interfere with the full aromatic expression of the wines we produce. Apiculture, and a rich biodiversity, together with our strict adherence to organic farming and production techniques testify to our deep respect for the environment.

Sicily’s average annual wine production of 635 million litres (4th in volume among the regions) ncludes about 4% DOC/DOCG and 25% IGT. White wine accounts for some 70% of Sicily’s production. Contrasts are not the least of those things in which Sicily abounds. So perhaps it is not surprising that this ancient island boasts one of Italy’s most dynamic wine industries or that a region noted chiefly in the past for strong and often sweet amber Marsala and Moscato has put new emphasis on dry, modern wines – both red and white. Sicily’s rising status is reflected in the promotion of Cerasuolo di Vittoria to DOCG. That pale but potent red from Nero d’Avola and Frappato is recognised as Cerasuolo di Vittoria Classico from around the town of Vittoria. A major share of Sicily’s DOC production is represented by Marsala, a wine originated by English merchant traders two centuries ago. The other DOC wine made in quantity is the pale white, bone dry Bianco d’Alcamo, part of the broader Alcamo appellation. Moscato di Pantelleria, from the remote isle off the coast of Tunisia, is among the most esteemed of Italian sweet wines. Malvasia delle Lipari, from the volcanic Aeolian isles, is a dessert wine as exquisite as it is rare. Production of the other traditional DOCs – the dry, red Faro and the sweet Moscatos of Noto and Siracusa – has been slight in recent times, but the volume of premium wines has increased with the addition of DOCs from various parts of the island. The greatest surge in volume of quality wine has not come with DOC/DOCG – which still represents only about 5% of total production – but with the rapid expansion of IGT, primarily under the region wide Sicilia appellation. Many fine wines come from native varieties, notable Nero d’Avola (or Calabrese), Nerello Mascalese and Perricone (or Pignatello) among the reds, and Inzolia and Grecanico among the whites. Also prominent are such international varieties as Chardonnays, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah.

AL-CANTÁRA

l-Cantàra, a young Sicilian winery, has established a reputation thanks to the high quality of its wines, awarded with important prizes and to the sophisticated packaging.

In its 20 hectares of land on Mount Etna (Contrada Feudo S. Anastasia SP89 - Randazzo CT) at 650 metres asl, we currently produce 60.000 bottles per year but have capacity for a larger production. We use native grapes varieties, such as Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio, Carricante and we also experiment with Pinot Noir and about 1.000 litres per year of extra virgin olive oil.

The name "Al-Cantàra", "bridge" in Arabic, emphasises the link with the Sicilian terroir and the union between wine, art and poetry. For this reason, all our labels are an artistic reinterpretation of poems by Sicilian authors: „Poems to drink".

ARINI CASA VINICOLA

The Arini family business started up in 1952 and, over the years, production has gradually increased to 20,000 hectolitres. The wine is aged in oak casks using traditional methods. The wine production plant is imbued with old world charm and introduces visitors to an authentic environment that has remained unchanged for centuries. Long rows of wooden barrels exhale a scent that only the genuine product can exude. Due to a steadily increasing volume of business, our production plant in the town of Marsala will be expanded in the near future, while retaining a ‘quality over quantity’ approach. The company has developed very fine dessert wines and markets them throughout Italy, along with some high quality wines such as their Marsala DOC, Passito and Liquour wines, and their flavoured wines, Grillo, Insolia, Grecanico, Chardonnay and Nero d’Avola, Frappato, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah, not forgetting I.G.T. Sicilia, which has received excellent reviews in specialized wine magazines. The grapes are typically derived from selected vineyards lying at 300-400m above sea level, where they are exposed to sunshine and Mediterranean Sea breezes. This environment, together with the rich soil of Sicily, produces unique wines which are characterized by their particular aromatic and delectable qualities.

ARMOSA

“A r m o s A”, is a small family-owned estate (boutique winery), close to the ancient town of Scicli in south-eastern Sicily. “A r m o s A” has vineyards and a winery near the sea, and on the hill (six hectares of vineyards in all). Their philosophy is to leverage the terroir to produce high quality red wine with a distinct personality based on the Nero d’Avola, the noblest and most ancient grape in Sicily. All their wines are produced following a natural procedure without any filtration in order to preserve their integrity. Total annual average production is about 20,000 bottles, mainly two dry red wines: Siclys and Curma.

AZIENDA AGRICOLA FRANCESCO GUCCIONE

Our family tradition in winemaking goes all the way back to my great-grandfather. Nowadays, I cultivate the same land that has been passed down through generations. Although Cerasa is on the same territory as Monreale DOC, I have chosen to not be part of it. Instead, I have joined La Renaissance des Appellations, whose goal is to restore a proper ethical approach to the appellations by bringing biodynamic producers from all over the world together. My wines are regarded as a guideline to the local terroir and its expressive qualities, even though they are not classified DOC or IGT. I am located between San Cipirello and Piana Degli Albanesi in the district of Monreale, at about 500m above sea level. All our products are certified organic, and I have been actively practicing biodynamics since 2005. The total extension of the vineyard is six hectares. Trebbiano, Cataratto, Perricone and Nerello Mascalese. On our remaining four hectares I grow ancient varieties of Sicilian grain and vegetables, and I maintain a small pasture. I follow all the principles of biodynamic agriculture and life-style, so I do not use any external agents other than grapes when making my wine except for a tiny amount of sulphites added when bottling.

AZIENDA AGRICOLA MALTESE

The Maltese Company includes six generations who have laboured with passion and dedication to ensure the cultivation of the vine. It is located in the western part of Sicily where the horizon is filled with rolling hills and endless plains, descending to a warm sea. The sun, sea, land and wind remain etched in the minds of all those who visit this land. A place redolent with thousands of years of history, reflected in the deep beauty of the Mediterranean Sea. Its origins date back to 1800, when a small family owned a few acres, which were managed by Grandmother Cardeddra (her Maltese family gave her this nickname, which means wild grass’, because the lady loved to weed the rows). She was wedded to duty and sacrifice, and managed to overcome the difficulties and prejudices against women in those days, and keep the little business going gradually handing it over to her 14 children. Gianfranco, the current manager, devoted his life to this project in 2004, and is now continuing the multi-generation family tradition. Azienda Maltese is a well-run farm which is still under family management and maintains well-founded ideas about quality that continue to influence production. His respect for the traditional Sicilian countryside and earlier generations has led him to use growing techniques that seek to protect the environment, thus starting him on a journey that has now brought him to a place where he can take pride in his production under an organic farming label.

AZIENDA AGRICOLA TODARO

The history of the Todaro Winery has deep roots: a passion that has been passed from generation to generation and is enriched day by day. Giuseppe and Adriano Todaro (born 1988 and 1991), with the help of their father Calogero, have been able to lead the company and, within a few years, achieve top quality for the Jato Valley in Monreale DOC and the province of Palermo. Today, the property covers an area of 25 hectares in the Jato Valley with altitudes ranging from 400 to 900m above sea level. The continuous monitoring and daily care of the grapes in all processes, guarantee the authenticity and quality of these wines that have led Todaro Winery to be among the most appreciated Sicilian Wineries. The pursuit of quality is the goal that guides our every step, and since our passion is based on the conviction that only healthy and natural agriculture which respects the environment enables the best expression of the terroir and its features, we decided to produce organic wines to express our ideas.

BAGLIO AIMONE

This Company came into being in 2012 as the brainchild of Baldassare Paladino, a native of the city of Mazara del Vallo (TP), who shares his family’s passion for wine and true love for Sicily, and its amazing natural landscapes. The historical family house, ’Villa Aimone‘, is located in the pristine seaside village of Torretta Granitola, thereby suggesting a name for our ancient Baglio and surrounding vineyards, in the heart of the Natural “Preola Lake and Gorghi Tondi” Nature Reserve That same year, we established a close cooperation with the Agriconfront company, which is owned by brothers Giuseppe and Michele Marino, thereby turning his passion into a project and giving life to ’Baglio Aimone’. Today as then, we take pride in caring for our fields with passion and skill every day, and in offering wine-lovers all the beauty of Sicily, as pure as the wine harvest here.

CANDIDO

The 20 hectares of vineyards that are owned by the Candido family are located in the Agro Camporeale and Monreale countryside, two kilometres outside Camporeale. The red wine grape varieties are: Nero d’Avola, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. White grape varieties such as Catarratto, Grecanico, Grillo and Inzolia are also grown. Their love of nature has inspired the Candido family to use grape processing methods that respect the aromas and flavours of these fruits of the earth as much as possible. The winery is committed to organic cultivation and the vinification process is reminiscent of the island’s ancient culture of rural winemaking

CANTINA GIOSTRA REITANO

As a professional in the field of marketing and communication, Francesco Giostra Reitano decided to return to Sicily after 15 years of high-skilled employment abroad. While restoring his family’s former farm, Francesco Giostra Reitano took on, in 2004, the renovation of the abandoned estate of over 10 hectares and started the winery company with a handful of young fellow-entrepreneurs and farmers. Though it had been abandoned to the elements, it has now been converted into a beautiful, luxurious building on the promontory of Capo Rasocolmo. In a beautiful vineyard with an old farmhouse overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Aeolian Islands, we now produce a wine called DOC FARO, through natural farming methods. Our red ‘Rasocolmo’ Faro, is a blend of Nerello Mascalese, Nocera, Nerello Cappuccio, Nero d'Avola, Sangiovese, and is aged exclusively in steel.

We also produce Inzolia, a white wine using grapes from Castiglione di Sicilia which are grown on the slopes of Etna. With the renovation of the ancient stone farmhouse, Tenuta Rasocolmo is now available to enthusiasts and wine tourists, with its tasting room and outdoor patio with a garden for events and celebrations.

CVA CANICATTI

In the heart of the province of Agrigento we have a territory that can only be defined as sublime, where the practice of growing vines has ancient origins. The signs of this special vocation are easily observed in the countryside, where the waves of vine rows give life to an infinite geometry of vineyards and forms, thereby delineating the typical landscape of a sun-blessed Sicily with its harsh but generous land that a civilization based on the vine has profoundly marked. This is the magic of the Terre di Nero d'Avola, that brings to life in a glass, through the CVA Canicattí production, all the wine-making traditions of a territory and conveys all its potential with its Nero d'Avola, the most princely of Sicily’s native vines.

DE GREGORIO

Drawing confidence from his family’s hundred years engagement with traditional farming methods, Gregorio De Gregorio founded his own company in 1990, spreading over a large area that forms part of the original Feudo Sirignano, in the Monreale territory, an area of west Sicily, historically more suited for viticulture. Sixty hectares have been planted with vineyards, which were converted in 1998 into a fully organic production with EU certification ITBIO012 CO1480.

Today, the company markets its wines under its brand name, created in 2012, and make wines with organoleptic flavour characteristics that are strictly connected to their ‘terroir’ of origin, guaranteed by organic grape growing and processing.

RIOFAVARA

Riofavara is a family-run winery in the Val di Noto area, in south-eastern Sicily, located right in the heart of the native region of the famous Sicilian Nero d'Avola grape. Dating back to 1920, we have evolved into a modern winery using some of the latest winemaking techniques while respecting local traditions and the environment. We have adopted the principles of organic and biodynamic farming, taking every possible step to work as naturally as possible, both in the vineyard and in the cellar. Embracing the wealth of a 'terroir' that has been producing wine, particularly red ones, for centuries, our main objective is to produce wines which can convey the windy warm climate and the calcareous soils that characterize this southern-most corner of Sicily, taking in the provinces of Ragusa and Siracusa. The best comment we often hear about our wines is that they represent 'The genuine taste of Sicily”.

TENUTA BASTONACA AZ. AGRICOLA

For all that our gaze is firmly fixed on the future, we are just as firmly rooted in tradition. We are established in contrada bastonaca, in the heart of the production area for Cerasuolo di Vittoria, Frappato and Nero d’Avola. It is precisely through this land that all sorts of stories about wines can be found, in every corner where Tenuta Bastonaca occurs. Tenuta Bastonaca is a young, modern winery, with deep traditional roots. The head office is the old winery building which dates from the 17th century, and which has been completely restored. When you walk through this building you can still smell the fragrance of the grapes that have just been pressed in the old stone cisterns, and hear the sound of the must bubbling in the vats; you might also catch a faint echo of the ancient Sicilian songs that were sung to invoke a good wine harvest. All around, there are over 15,000 grapevines. The plants are rigorously suckered and head-trained, to revive a glorious past, while at the same time facing proudly due ‘sud’ (south), looking towards a promising future. The main variety of vines is Frappato, Grillo and Nero d’Avola, and also Grenache and Tannat, thereby combining passion and curiosity with tradition and innovation. We cultivate our vines with the aim of becoming organic, with a lot hard work and effort.  Nearly all our grapes are hand-picked in accordance with our vision of natural agriculture. We don’t irrigate the vines, to ensure that every grape yields a maximum concentration of the warmth of our land and its marvellous sunshine, the elements that give our wines their unique taste, our ‘sud’. We use natural raw materials and recycle, because respect for the earth is, for us, the most important issue. For us, and for Carlo Ferrini, a delightfully sensitive agricultural economist and winemaker, who works alongside us in our daily round of tasks.

TENUTA DELLE TERRE NERE

Tenuta delle Terre Nere is the result of over 30 years of passion and work in the world of fine wine. And what an extraordinary location it is, this "island within an island" that is Etna - that my brother and I chose. In fact, I sometimes think it actually chose us. A place where nature is prodigal, but also severe. It’s here that I try with all my heart to convey as purely as possible the refined and multifaceted microcosm of this ancient volcanic landscape. With respect, care and hard farmwork, always retaining an organic balance. Our estate's philosophy is simple. Given the extreme climate, obtaining the best and most consistent ripening involves focussing our attention on vineyard management. The finest workmanship in all aspects of viticulture is the first thing that sets us apart. And it is what enables us to produce exceptionally fine grapes, and not to be invasive in our cellar work. Our work is best described as aimed above all at conveying the character of our varieties, in their specific terroir. A great team, a delicate hand and a heightened sensibility, are also required. And our ideals, which drive us to give the best of ourselves in our quest, not for perfection, but for the ideal bond between what nature gives us and what our sensitivity, experience and imagination suggest. All this is what sets us apart.

TERRE DI BRUCA

In 2009, brothers Matteo and Daniele Barbera, together with their friend Giuseppe Blunda, bought the farm called Bruca, in a beautiful setting at the foot of the archaeological area in Segesta, where they decided to start producing their own wines. Their priority, based on their experience of agronomy and winemaking acquired over many years, was to produce something that could truly express the atmosphere of the region where these wonderful vineyards grow. Also, thanks to technical support provided by winemaker Vincenzo Bambina, and to the basic, natural production techniques they use, the company aims to produce wines that really express the way they are. In other words, to enhance the taste and pleasure of good wine, by “simply producing high quality”. Our days follow the rhythm of the vineyard, of leaves that are brushed by the wind and entwine with our hands, all of which is music to our ears. Talking about a vineyard, the sites and soils in which it grows, through its wine, is our life’s purpose.

VIVERA

The Vivera family owns three estates with vineyards and olive trees; all grown organically: Etna in Linguaglossa, Corleone in Palermo, Chiaramonte Gulfi in the province of Ragusa.

The VIVERA winery is located in Linguaglossa, on the north-eastern side of Etna, and is part of the Martinella cru, between the sea and the volcano, surrounded by vineyards.

All the family is employed in the winery, passionate about creating organic wines that are elegant and unique. This is possible, thanks to their creativity and respect for the land, rich in minerals and volcanic soil on Mount Etna, breazy with lots of hills in Corleone.

The grapes are hand-harvested. Inside the cellar, the traditional processes are joined by the latest ideas, ensuring respect for the grape, as it is from Nature that the winery has drawn its inspiration to become eco-friendly.

You will discover the whole cellar, room by room, through a sequence of colors that change from green to yellow, and from red to blue. This colour therapy is designed to elicit positive emotions in those who work inside, and to enhance the quality of the wine and of everyday life.

A quality that demonstrates the art of living with taste, which is entirely Sicilian.
