Kelyan Lab, technology on a human scale

Kelyan Lab, technology on a human scale Rome - (Ign) - In only a few years it has become the leading Italian supplier of platforms for operators of mobile and wireless telecommunications. It boasts amongst its clients the leading company in the sector in Italy, the Telecom Italia group, but is developing at an ever accelerating rate, also looking to international markets, and now with a solid reputation also in Latin America, Greece, and soon Turkey. This is an extremely short summary of what has been achieved by Kelyan Lab, the company set up in 2000 to respond to the growing demand for high-technology services from the world of telecommunications in general, and mobile telecommunications in particular. The core business of the Kelyan Lab is providing multimedia services for mobile terminals, both for consumer and business users, but also communications systems which may be developed from the convergence of the various telecommunications networks, both fixed and mobile, as well as land-based digital TV, Internet, etc. A tried and tested group of technicians and young managers is led by Luca Tomassini, himself only 40 years old. He chose Orvieto, a small and beautiful city of art, on a human scale, as the base to launch this futuristic project: to propose to the international market models and procedures to allow communication between any two places, at any time and using any device.

Your company has to keep one step ahead of the latest technology. And it's very easy to make mistakes. Don't you find this a difficult challenge, Mr Tomassini?

"We have always tried to look to the future of this complex world of telecommunications, but without ever losing contact with reality. We have always invested a great deal in research and innovation, but respecting what were likely to be the future needs of our customers, especially after the arrival of UMTS mobile telephones. This is a difficult sector, I have to admit, but we have always managed to maintain a relatively short gap between the services we offer and the technologies available to make them work".

In addition to having good ideas, you also need to know how to sell them. How have you dealt with the problem of marketing your products?

"We are not a traditional company in this area either. We don't make the product and then try to sell it. Rather, we design a service and study it, checking first that the necessary technologies are available, but above all, we discuss with the potential customer if such a service may benefit his company and bring profits. Basically, first we come up with a business idea, then discuss it with the customer and then finalise the design".

Have you begun looking towards foreign markets?

"Yes, of course. Moreover, the net makes it possible to delocalise services and provide them anywhere at any time. Our idea is in fact that of providing services to anyone at any time, and no national borders are therefore insurmountable. We already have a number of agencies in Europe and we are also operative in South America and Greece. Soon it will be the turn of Turkey, and then other countries. The aim is to realise at least 35% of future turnover on international markets".

Mr Tomassini, what does the future hold for Kelyan?

"Above all we intend to rise to the challenge of providing multimedia services on any device at the same time, from mobile telephones and the Web, to media centres and digital television. And we want to see real convergence, making it possible to infinitely multiply the potential of the telecommunications system. We want to play a leading role in this future.".
