ITALIAN HYDRAULIC AND PNEUMATIC MACHINERY SET FOR INDIA AT THE MDA FAIR IN BANGALORE

ITALIAN HYDRAULIC AND PNEUMATIC MACHINERY SET FOR INDIA AT THE MDA FAIR IN BANGALORE

The Italian hydraulic and pneumatic machinery industry is ready to test the Indian market, by participating in the first edition of the International Trade Fair for Motion, Drive and Automation (MDA INDIA) in Bangalore. A wide number of SME’s, under the aegis of the Italian Trade Commission (ICE), will take part in the event: among them, producers of earth moving machinery, and machinery for the construction, agricultural and textiles industries.

MDA INDIA (www.mda-india.com) will be launched on the 4-7th December 2007 in the new Bangalore International Exhibition Center (Biec). The Bangalore region is the most industrialised in India and is where the most important mechanical, engineering, textile, chemical industries of the country are based, as well as some significant firms in the steel and metal industry.

The outlook for the Indian automotive sector is encouraging. Even though the percentage of cars for every thousand inhabitant is about 80-100 times lower than in the most mature western markets (Germany, US, UK), India has the potential to become one of the five leading automotive countries in the world by 2025. According to the latest data available, the country is already the fourth global producer of trucks and commercial vehicles, with an annual growth of 32%. As far as agriculture is concerned – one of the prime fields of application for hydraulic machinery (transmission-gear and axles) – India has a medium level of mechanisation (18 tractors/1,000 ha compared to 28 tractors/1,000 ha in the US and Europe). And although the local industry in agricultural machinery is sufficiently mature to give little leeway to western competitors who want to enter the market, there are still some opportunities for outsourcing, possibly through the development of Indian-Italian joint ventures to produce at a more competitive cost.

The objective of the Italian delegation is, therefore, to increase the awareness of Italian technology in the hydraulic, pneumatic and transmission-gear machinery sector among Indian traders. At the same time, the aim will be to facilitate a gradual development of industrial and trade links between Italian and Indian firms. The conditions are particularly favourable, especially in the transmission-gear sector: India’s demand for imports and for the production of industrial machinery is constantly growing, and foreign suppliers have an opportunity to satisfy the need for the technological upgrade of the local industry.

Another element that could contribute positively is the traditional propensity to export of the Italian ‘fluid power’ industry (pumps, engines, cylinders, lubricating equipment, vacuum components): in 2006 foreign sales increased by 13% in the hydraulic sector and by 18% for pneumatic machinery. There were two-figure increases also in the production: +12% for hydraulic machinery and +15.5% for pneumatic ones. The positive trend should continue this year: the 20% increase in orders for the end of 2006 announced by Assofluid (www.assofluid.it) - the industry’s trade association – indicates that 2007 is going to be another excellent year.

In the last year the Italian market for hydraulic and pneumatic machinery was worth 2.2 billion euros – of which 1.6 billion came from the hydraulic sector, while exports were worth 1.6 billion euros (1.3 billion from the hydraulic machinery). The industry included 470 firms – 350 in the hydraulic sector – almost all of them SME’s.
