ITALIAN KNITWEAR YARNS FLY TO SHANGHAI
Rome (Ign) - A growth market of fundamental importance to the Italian Fashion System. We are talking about yarns for knitwear, which will be among the protagonists at Spinexpo (www.spinexpo.com), one of the key events in the fashion world. The fair, to be held in Shanghai between 7 and 9 March, will be dedicated to the 2008 summer season, and will be presented in the prestigious setting of the luxurious Shanghai International Convention Center. For the 2007 edition the objective is to exceed last year's 180 exhibitors and almost 9000 visitors, in order to make the event one of the most important in the Far East. Spinexpo will allow the companies which take part to measure themselves against one of the most important competitors of the moment: China. For this reason, the Italian Institute for Foreign Trade (ICE) has organised a collective delegation, in which 17 top-level companies will take part, together with a "Pitti Filati" Research Point.
Yarns for knitwear are a key sector in the Italian textiles industry, because they represent its foundation. In 2006, turnover in the spinning sector grew by 1.3%, thus passing the threshold of €3.5bn. Almost a third of total turnover came from exports (€1.138bn). In total, turnover in spinning represented 15.7% of sales of the textiles industry and around 6.6% of overall turnover in the Italian textiles-fashion supply chain. This result is also due to good performance in the individual subsectors. A case in point is knitwear, for example, which showed growth of +3%, or carded knitwear yarns, which saw rises of 1.9%.
But the real heart of the industry is the districts, which are characterised by their extreme attention to detail and the quality of their products, and it is no coincidence that they are used for goods in the luxury sector. A perfect example is the textiles district of Biella, which has always focused on exports, and whose major clients include the most important countries in the EU, Hong Kong, Japan and the United States. Its success is due to the high number of businesses - above all medium-small - which operate in the sector (around 1500, for a total of 25,000 jobs, with around €4bn in annual turnover for textiles as a whole, of which 40% is accounted for by exports). These have made the district of Biella one of the leading wool centres in the world, as well the undisputed leader in the production of yarns, wool fabrics and other quality fibres (cashmere, alpaca, mohair, etc) for the luxury market. So much so that, recently, it adopted the mark of origin "Biella - The art of excellence" (www.biellatheartofexcellence.com) in order to boost its force on the international market and at the same time provide a further guarantee to the consumer. Basically, the Italian mission to China on one hand will allow the top companies to consolidate their position and focus on new targets, also and above all in the Far East, and on the other will allow commercial joint initiatives to be set up by smaller companies so that they can win over their own slice of the global market.
