AEROSPACE AND DEFENCE. ITALIAN PRODUCTS IN RIO DE JANEIRO
Rome (Ign) - Industrial products and technologies for aeronautics and space, air transport and defence will take centre stage at LAAD, the International Exhibition and Conferences on Aerospace & Defence Technology (http://www.laadexpo.com/), one of the most important shows in the sector, that will open in Rio de Janeiro on 17 April, at the impressive multifunctional complex RioCentro. The LAAD is much more than a fair; with its intensive series of events, including conferences and international congresses, it has become one of the most interesting meeting points for professionals in the sector. The show, which takes place every two years, is now in its 10th edition: the last, in 2005, hosted 305 exhibitors from 31 countries, and over 12,000 trade professionals. For 2007, an extensive exhibition area dedicated to helicopter production is also planned. This is an important opportunity for Italian industry, which in this sector has earned itself a position at the very forefront on all international markets. In this scenario, of particular importance is the initiative taken by the Italian Institute for Foreign Trade (ICE) in collaboration with AIAD (the Italian association of aerospace industries, systems and defence - www.aiad.it), to organise a collective delegation presenting the very best of Italian products in the sector.
The Italian aerospace industry has in fact managed to achieve an increasingly important role and is now considered one of the world leaders. And in terms of exports, there is still great room for further development, especially in new segments of the market, thanks above all to the efforts and investments which continue to be spent in technological research and development. Italian industry in the sector was able to generate in 2006 an overall turnover of around €11 billion, putting it in sixth place in the world. Growth is also due to the presence of numerous districts, which has encouraged particularly effective development of the most innovative technologies maintaining a high degree of integration between the various phases of the production process. The main industrial districts in the sector are those in Campania, Piedmont and Lombardy. The first of these accounts for around 100 companies, and 10,000 jobs; it is one of the most important productive systems in the region and the companies which are part of it alone realised a sixth of domestic business in the sector, thanks, in particular, to component supply agreements with major American manufacturers, such as Boeing.
The district in Piedmont accounts for over 400 companies in the avionics and aerospace sectors, provides almost 10,000 jobs and is characterised by the marked vertical integration of every production phase. The hinterland of Turin produces highly complex and safe vehicles designed for air defence, not least the new pilotless aircraft able to fly without direct pilot intervention in complete independence. This is a technological jewel, the result of the collaboration of various companies in the district, aggregated around the leader Alenia. The aircraft will soon also be available in a civil aviation version and in a few years should become the cornerstone of air patrol. Lastly, there is the Lombard district, with no fewer than 10,000 jobs and over 200 companies, among which stand out Agusta Westland - one of the world leaders in the sector of helicopters, both civil and military - and Aermacchi, the great specialist in the production of training apparatus.
