THE EXCELLENCE OF BIOTECH MADE IN ITALY TRAVELS TO HAMBURG
The dynamic and promising biotech sector of Made in Italy will be on display in Germany from 12 to 14 November during theBio Europe 2012 Partnering Conference, to be held in Hamburg. The ICE (the Italian Trade Promotion Agency) in conjunction with the Assobiotec have organized a 40 square metre stand entitled Focal Point Italia, located in the centre of the trade fair exhibition space. 17 Italian producers, scientific and technological research parks and centres from the biotech sector will present their products.
Visitors and area experts who visit the exhibition will have the opportunity to inform themselves about innovative quality and technology, with a focus on vaccines, bio pharmaceuticals and diagnostics from Italian research and development laboratories, with a perfect opportunity to build a solid basis for new partnerships. Italy has the third highest number, after Germany and the United Kingdom, of companies operating in the biotech sector, a total of 395 when including those which are not purely biotech. Topping the list are those applying bio technologies to the health industry, a total of 238, followed by the green sector, and by the multi-sector group. It should be noted that the numbers are made up mainly of small and medium sized companies, the active ‘fabric’ of the Italian economy which dedicates extensive space to research and development. Many of the companies are also integrated within scientific and technology parks, authentic centres for the meeting of research, industry, and investors, capable of constructing networks of excellence, and activities of support and fundraising.
The sector turnover is around 7 billion Euros, with an increase of 4% over the previous year. Looking at the Italian pipeline as a whole, 319 products for therapeutic use can be counted, of which 80 in the pre-clinical phase, 43 in Phase I, 98 in Phase II, and 98 in Phase III. To round out these facts regarding the Italian biotech sector drawn from a 2011 report, we add the indisputable quality of the product, which will definitely be of interest to the German experts, considered to be the most authoritative. In fact, Germany is the European sector leader, with the number of dedicated biotechnology companies at 531, with a medium life span of nine years.
The Focal Point Italia will welcome all with services offered by ICE (Italian Trade Promotion Agency) ranging from orientation, which allows a choice of the most appropriate Italian company with which to commence a face-to-face relationship, to interpretation services. A site www.biotechinitaly.com is available for foreign visitors who may wish to inform themselves prior to the trade fair. The site presents information and the entrepreneurial reality of the sector. The previous edition of Bio Europe registered increased participation numbers, with 2911 delegates from 1,596 companies, for 94 exhibitors. There were 14,765 one-to-one meetings, with 3,565 published licensing opportunities. High numbers are also expected for this year, and the Made in Italy companies, although still relatively young, are ready to offer experience and technology of an excellent quality.
