ITALIAN-MADE LEATHER-WORKING MACHINERY
Not many people know that the Italian export quota for textile machines and shoe-making machinery exceeds the contribution made by clothing and footwear.
This is, therefore, a case of one excellent business surpassing another.
A large Italian collective from the sector will soon be taking part in one of the most important international events for the entire leather industry.
It is the Aplf-MM&T Fair (Asia Pacific Leather Fair – Materials, Manufacturing & Technology), to be held in Hong Kong from March 31st to April 2nd 2014.
This annual exhibition is now in its thirtieth year and attracts visitors from China and all parts of South-east Asia.
This is the top event in the year for the global leather industry and serves as a real hub for all operators in the sector and an important purchasing opportunity for fashion professionals. On display in the pavilions will be the whole production chain of the leather industry, from tanning to components, accessories and machinery.
The present-day APLF event had its beginnings in the “Hong Kong Leather Fair”, instituted in 1984 as China’s first “global” fair for the leather industry. The thirtieth anniversary of the exhibition will be celebrated this year. The 2013 edition witnessed the presence of 18,467 buyers from 88 countries.
For Italian manufacturers of this technology the fair therefore constitutes a very important appointment. More than 30 Italian companies will be taking part, in a pavilion organised by the trade association Assomac, and with the support and presence of the Italian Trade Promotion Agency (ICE).
The aim is to promote the activities of Italian companies operating in the sector of leather-working machinery, advancing their position on the Chinese market, which is certainly one of the most strategic. Technology, innovation and high quality are the hallmarks which make this Italian sector one of the most sought-after in the world, and the fair will offer the opportunity to explore all the latest innovations.
In the tanning machine sector, China remains the main export market for Italy. After a brilliant result in 2011 (+60% with respect to 2010), exports of this type of machinery, both directly and via Hong Kong, suffered a fall of about 30% in 2012, with the value of sales amounting to €16.86 million. As regards the sector for footwear manufacturing machinery, after India, China constitutes the second most important export market.
The value of these exports in 2012, both directly and through Hong Kong, was equivalent to €3.85 million, a decrease of 43.11% on 2011.
In the sector for leather-working machines, Italian exports are mainly directed towards Western Europe, but China still represents the main Asian market, with exports in 2012 amounting to €1.12 million.
