SICS.SYN: A REVOLUTION IN THE HEALTH INDUSTRY
Rome (Ign) - An information system has been designed for medical applications, which allows complete and integrated management of flows and processes; it can be easily adapted to all medical and health centres, both public and private, guaranteeing optimal management of the databases. The product is called Sics.syn and is made by Synapsis (www.websynapsis.com), a highly technological company that manufactures and distributes innovative solutions for the health market.
Sics.syn, the acronym of "Sistema Informativo Clinico-Santiario" (Clinical and health information system) is based on modules logically grouped together according to health, clinical and integration data, in accordance with the international standards promoted by the Integrating Healthcare Enterprise (IHE) project (http://www.ihe.net). The system uses latest generation technology and allows complete and integrated management of the clinical and health processes and flows. The standardisation and sharing of the contents guarantees complete management of the data, through four categories of folders (neurology, oncology, internal medicine and multidisciplinary). Sics.syn also includes an acceptance, discharge and transfer tool for patients - also designed by Synapsis - that uses a common international communication protocol. The central register also uses a single database and the filing of clinical documents can be carried out in all the current electronic formats. Finally, the system also has a telemedicine platform that allows the consultancy process to be managed, also allowing digital radiological images to be shared and allowing consultants to visualise and express their opinion on line.
Synapsis is located in Livorno (Italy) and was founded in 1996 by a team of professionals, consultants and researchers from Pisa University. It is one of the 15 spin-offs of the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna in Pisa and has chosen to entirely focus on technological innovation in the health industry. The company produces systems for data management and clinical files, portals for hospitals and software solutions. Its solutions are entirely based on open technology, that is on standard software elements independent from the software and hardware platforms that they are used on. Hence, it is possible to access the information from the hospital facilities and from the doctor's home or surgery and also from the patient's own home. Naturally, updates can also be distributed more easily in a generalised manner to all the users, with a substantial reduction in system management costs.
Synapsis has been working with international industries for many years. Its research activity is also funded by the Ministry of Education, the European Commission, the Italian Space Agency, the European Space Agency and the National Council for Research. Synapsis' mission is to develop ICT projects and solutions which aim to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the processes in the health centres, supporting doctors in facing their clinical, scientific and decisional activities and offering patients improved assistance towards optimising the processes connected with care continuity.
