ENERGY LAB GROWS BY DEVELOPING CLEAN ENERGY AND LOOKS TO LATIN AMERICA
This is a young, dynamic company, which made the decision to focus on renewables: a business which, following its launch on the Italian Stock Exchange, is now looking at the potential for growth in Latin America. Its name is Energy Lab , and it closed its books for 2013 with a turnover of approximately 10 million Euros and a profit of 20%. To explain how the company works and what it is hoping to achieve, we turned to its founder and CEO, Giovanni Dorbolò.
- How and when was Energy Lab established?
The company was founded in 2008 and was based on my own idea. It was initially established with the aim of diversifying my family's investments into sectors with high growth potential, such as renewable energy. However, Energy Lab immediately showed a huge potential for success.
- What distinguishes it from other companies operating in the renewable energy sector?
The company's core business is divided up into various lines: we design and build medium-sized plants for the production of energy from renewable sources, under the EPC (Engineering, Procurement, Construction) model; and we design and market solutions for energy efficiency (including own-brand products and innovative proprietary solutions in the field of solar heating). We also design, install and operate biomass plants: an activity funded predominantly by direct investments from the company. Finally, we offer O & M (Operations & Maintenance) and Asset Management services.
What are the company's strengths? And what projects do you want to implement?
All our activities are going well and we are achieving our growth targets, but in the future we want to focus primarily on developing solutions for the exploitation of biomass energy. We have developed significant expertise in this particular area, and this enables us to look towards the future with a strong propensity for growth.
- What is your relationship with foreign markets? Do you have a presence abroad, and in what way?
We are very interested in the international markets. The funds raised for the company by our IPO will be used to support our growth process, especially in other parts of Europe, Africa, and South America, the areas of greatest interest to us.
- Would you like to expand your presence? If so: where and how?
South America is very fertile territory for initiatives related to renewable energy. We are developing projects in Chile, Argentina and Ecuador. Mainly we offer ourselves as an EPC contractor for the construction of photo-voltaic plants. In these areas, average radiation levels are very high, and the growth of these economies requires readily available energy. Our solutions fit these needs perfectly, thanks to technological advancements and to the competitiveness in the market that the photovoltaic industry has now achieved.
How have you dealt with the economic crisis?
The industry in which we operate witnessed significant growth in the years from 2008 up to 2012. As a result of constant changes in the law, many companies have been left in considerable difficulty in the Italian market. We have had the foresight to grow in a balanced way and, above all, have created a solid foundation on which to face the future.
Our ability to diversify our solutions and to operate in different markets enables us to spread the risk.
Another very important factor, which has allowed us to ride out several changes of direction on the part of the government and the market, is the flexibility of our workforce: a team made up of expert, dynamic individuals who approach each project in just the right spirit to achieve a good result.
