Custom-built travel

Custom-built travel

Rome - (Adnkronos Multimedia) - Almost seventy years of history, which have turned the Tagliavia Group in Palermo into one of the most dynamic Italian companies in the transportation and logistics sector, now occupying a leading position in a very special niche in the market, that of "custom-built" services. With a turnover of more than 7 million euro, Tagliavia (www.tagliavia.it) operates throughout the whole of Italy and his clients are spread throughout the five continents in a very specialised market, offering highly professional services. Founded in 1938 by Count Salvatore Tagliavia, former Mayor of Palermo, as well as a ship-owner of international fame with his fleet of seven oil tankers, the firm is today led by the fourth generation of the Tagliavia family, and it is Luigi who covers the role of general manager, as well as being the Honorary Consul for the United Kingdom in Palermo, again following a family tradition because his father was at one time the Norwegian Consul. We asked Luigi Tagliavia what was the importance today of the sector for transportation of goods and logistics in Italy.

"Logistics - Tagliavia replied - represents in Europe five percent of the price of the major part of products traded. But Italy is hugely distanced from this data. In Italy not even a figure of three percent is reached".

You began activities almost seventy years ago. How did you develop and what are the most important changes that have taken place in your firm?

"It has not been an easy ride. Our firm suffered a big knock-back during the 80s due to the death of my father. We were very young and little accustomed to managing a firm. We had to learn everything. Today, after 20 years of work we have put a host of difficulties behind us. We are very satisfied and some time ago we embarked on a course of development which is continuing to be unstoppable. Today with the frenetic changes taking place on the economic scene we need to act with great caution and to aim at sectors which will remain dominant for firms providing services. It is a bet we have to take, but our firm, operating in varied sectors - including informatics - by way of participation, places us in a situation of relative calm. Today we can state that we are one of the most advanced firms in the sector with regard to operating and management capacities, using computerised processes. We are constantly on the lookout for personnel and we have advertised a competition for a study grant so as to be able to make a selection of personnel on a regional basis, very serious and e-precise. I believe that these things, above all if they are taken in the regional context of Sicily where we operate, do provide a precise indication on our desire for development and growth".

What are the new technologies for a firm such as yours?

"Today we have achieved our fifth cycle of computerisation. We have always believed in and invested in technology and now, thanks to the great capacities provided by the new software, we will be able to succeed in solving the unavoidable setbacks typical to the sectors of transport and tourism".

What kind of future do you see for your firm, and in general for Italian firms in the sector?

"I believe that we must do our utmost to transmit a message of growth and overall socio-economic development. The "Italia System" does have great limitations and the Sicilian system even more. A comparison between our development and that of many other European countries shows that we are in difficulty today".

The sector is dominated by a number of large-sized multinationals: what is the strategy for an Italian operator?

"We cannot make a comparison here, not even for a second, with the large firms operating at world level in the sector. We sell different services.
Ours are still "hand sewn" and "custom-built", while the large multinationals have standardised and schematised everything and for them it is very hard to escape from these pre-established schemes and procedures".
