ITALIAN FARMING MACHINERY CONQUERS SOUTH AMERICA Rome (Ign) - The agricultural industry now owes a lot to technological innovation and production efficiency, even in the developing countries where, in order to compete on global markets, improving farming techniques have taken on an increasingly important role. This is why professionals in the agricultural machinery and technology industry will be focusing extra attention on the main Brazilian event in the industry, the Agrishow 2007 (http://www.agrishow.com.br), which will be held from 22nd to 26th May in the State of Sao Paolo, at the Agronomy Centre of the Agricultural Institute of Campinas - IAC of Riberão Preto. The event is now in its 14th edition and last year hosted 600 exhibitors and over 130,000 professionals, recording business worth € 185 million. For 2007 the show will cover an exhibition area of 175,000 square metres and 200 hectares for live demonstrations. Italy will also be present as the Italian Institute for Foreign Trade (ICE), in association with the Unacoma industry association, (http://www.unacoma.com) is currently organising a collective delegation for the event, so that Italian companies working in the sector can present their products.

According to Unacoma data, Italy will be among the leading countries on an international level, offering an extensive range of products from tractors (86,000 sold in 2005) to machinery for all types of processes, such as ploughing, seed-sowing, fertilising product handling inside farms and transport, as well as machinery for gardening, an area that is rapidly developing, particularly in the main foreign markets. The strength of Italian industry in this field is based on the extreme variety within Italy itself, which has made it necessary to invent and build extremely diversified machinery in order to meet the needs of a wide range of soil conditions. Its excellence is reflected by the industry figures: in 2005 the Italian agricultural machinery and tractor division confirmed its place as leader in Europe with a € 7.1 billion turnover, of which over half was accounted for by exports.

The earth-moving machinery division also achieved very positive results: in 2005 in Italy €3.4 billion worth of these machines were produced, 60% of which were destined for foreign markets, to over 130 countries, with a trade surplus of almost € 1 billion. The most important customers include the USA, France, the UK, Spain and Germany. The production structure is one of the winning factors in this industry, made up of many small and medium-sized companies who are at the same time important transnational producers and have succeeded in being the first to open up the main distribution channels for export. This outstanding synergy between the producers has made it possible to take on the challenge of international competition in advantageous conditions, continuously identifying new openings for trade.
