ITALIAN COMPANIES AT REBUILD IRAQ 2007 TOO
Rome (Ign) - Rebuild Iraq, the great multisectorial exhibition for rebuilding Iraq, now in its fourth edition, will be held from 7th to 10th May in Jordan, at the Amman Exhibitions Center Abdali (http://www.rebuild-iraq-expo.com/). In 2006, 1025 exhibitors took part, from 49 different countries, and 13,500 members of the public attended the exhibition. The array of products and services offered at the exhibition is extremely wide and of great interest for the Italian companies present, thanks to the organisation of the Italian Institute for Foreign Trade (ICE).
There will be many opportunities for Italian companies in Amman, particularly because Italy is well positioned in all the main sectors involved in the context of rebuilding Iraq and the aid provided for the population. This is particularly relevant for the civil construction and infrastructure industries, including the sub-division of raw materials for construction, in which Italy occupies a leading position. The sector recorded net growth in 2006, evidence of which also comes from the positive balance in the creation of small and medium-sized companies in the sector, which was over 1 %. The positive results were due to the particular geographical distribution of the companies that saw important territorial aggregations between companies of different sizes, from the smallest specialising in niche production, to the larger ones, able to manage important infrastructural interventions.
Other important industries with an Italian presence in Amman are electronics, thermomechanics and electromechanics. In terms of the electronics industry, Italy can count on an industrial system of over 1100 companies, with a turnover that exceeded € 56 billion in 2006, almost 30% of which was realised abroad. The industry invests 4.6% of turnover in research and development and is in one of the first places on an international level. The leap made by the microelectronics division which, for the first time, recorded a growth rate greater than the European average is particularly significant (6.2% compared to 1.6%), with a € 1.348 billion turnover. The telecommunications industry now represents almost half of all Italian export to Iraq, which in 2006 reached € 300 million. As for thermomechanics and electromechanics, the position of Italian companies on the international markets is in the front line, with 4500 companies and 78,000 members of staff involved and a turnover which exceeded € 8 billion in 2006, placing Italian industry in the third place in Europe.
Finally, the textiles and clothing industry is also present at Rebuild Iraq: after five difficult years, it has started to grow again. The industry in this division closed 2006 with a turnover of € 68 billion (+6% compared to 2005) and for 2007 the Chamber of Italian Fashion has reported further growth based on ISTAT data, which projects the revenue of the textile, clothing, leather and shoe companies to reach over € 70 billion. China has shown to be a growing market, absorbing 17.3% of foreign sales, and becoming the third in line after Germany and France.
