THE ITALY OF VIDEO GAMES ARRIVES IN SAN FRANCISCO
It's a massive market which still has considerable room for growth in Italy. The global video games industry represents a market of 80 billion euros and in Italy, where it has already overtaken cinema and music, it is worth almost one billion euros. Thus, the Italian industry is not about to miss the largest world event dedicated to video game developers, the Game Developers Conference 2016 (GDC). This year, it will take place in the most important market, the US.
The dates are set for March 14 to 18, 2016 in San Francisco, at the Moscone Convention Center. As on the previous occasion, the emerging Italian industry will be supported by the Italian Trade Agency, ICE, in partnership with the sector's Association, the AESVI. Last year's event attracted over 26 thousand visitors. It is an opportunity for all those involved in the development of interactive games to gather and exchange ideas and so shape the industry's future. Amongst others, this includes programmers, artists, producers, game designers and audio sector professionals. Italy will be represented by 12 companies, united under the "Games in Italy " brand in an exhibition area of ‚Äč‚Äčabout 90-100 sq m. They will occupy the same spot as last year. This is in an excellent position (at the main entrance) with high visibility.
At the GDC it will be possible to meet the companies who best represent Italian gaming. It currently represents one of the fastest growing economic sectors, one which is able to compete, in terms of turnover and profits, with the traditional entertainment and software industries. Italy is known to be a major consumer of video games. However, on the production side it has yet to achieve its full potential.
From the point of view of sales, Italy is actually the fourth largest market in Europe and the ninth largest in the world in terms of turnover (more than 1.5 billion euros in 2014) and it has about 29 million active gamers. From the point of view of production, Italy still does not appear in the list of the main videogame producing countries on the competitive international scene. In 2014 there were over 100 studios throughout the country, most of which were created in the last 3 years. These are young entrepreneurs (over 30% are under 30 years old), with a predominantly technical and scientific education. Their games are developed in Italy and placed on the international market. In fact, 98% of Italian developers distribute their products in Europe and 91% in North America, followed by South America (71%) and the Asian/Pacific area (65%).
The GDC is therefore a unique opportunity to get in touch with the firms of Italian developers and discover their creativity and innovation at first hand. They have what it takes to expand an already rapidly growing market and carve out an increasingly prominent role for themselves on the international scene.
