ARAB HEALTH: MEDICAL APPARATUS ON SHOW IN DUBAI

Rome (Ign) - Four days living and breathing international medical technology. From 29 January to 1 February, Dubai in the United Arab Emirates will be home to Arab Health (www.arabhealthonline.com/), the Middle East's leading fair in the medical-health sector. Dedicated to medical apparatus, surgical and orthopaedic apparatus, Arab Health is a show that for 31 years has been offering companies the possibility of presenting their products and services in one of the fastest-growing markets in the world. Since 2001 the exhibition space has grown every year by 25%, and last year's edition witnessed the participation of almost 32000 visitors. The 2007 edition will aim to set a new record by hosting over 2000 companies from 67 countries, while there will be 250 chairmen for the conferences taking place during the show looking at the most important issues in world health. Among the countries present there will be Italy, with a collective delegation organised by the Italian Institute for Foreign Trade (ICE).
The Italian businesses in the field of medical apparatus are an industrial reality in constant growth: the majority of the companies in the sector are medium-sized - the vast majority has between 10 and 49 employees - but thanks to constant and significant investments in research and development, they have managed to achieve world leadership in many fields, including biomedical lasers, electro-scalpels, coagulators and surgical aspirators, and to penetrate foreign markets with significant results above all in the Middle East and Russia.
One of the leading Italian districts is that of Mirandola in the province of Modena in Emilia Romagna, dating back to the 1960s around the company of Sterilplast (then Dasco, Divisione Apparecchi Scientifici Ospedalieri) owned by Mario Veronesi, which holds the record for being the producer of the first Italian artificial kidney. That was back in 1966, and from that moment on the success of the product made it possible to clinch a series of production deals with a number of multinationals such as Baxter, Mallinkrodt, Braun Carex, and Biofil. Sterilplast led to various spin offs (such as Bellco, Dideco and Dar), which act as a driving force for the district. The area specialises above all in two types of products: disposable items used in dialysis, heart surgery, anaesthesia and autotransfusion; and apparatus for dialysis, heart surgery and transfusion.
Today a concentration of businesses such as that around Modena is present in only a few other areas of the world. Here, there 71 companies in all, providing jobs for over 3600 people, with an overall turnover exceeding €500m, 60% realised abroad. This is all thanks to a process of gemmation that has led to the setting up of a series of small businesses producing under contract for larger companies which find it more cost-effective to outsource some production phases. In particular, those of circuits and accessories for dialysis and for the cardiovascular sector, which today is the pride of the district.
