THE ITALIAN AUTOMOTIVE COMPONENTS INDUSTRY ON THE LOOKOUT FOR OPPORTUNITIES IN MEXICO

Consolidating the market positions which have already been established and, wherever possible, expand in the niches with the highest added value for our country. This is the mission statement for the official delegation of Italian automotive industries, led by the Italian Trade Commission (ICE), which will participate in the 2007 edition of PAACE Automechanika Mexico (www.usa.messefrankfurt.com/shows/northamerica/ paace/index.htm). The international automotive fair, which will take place in Mexico City on July 11, 12 and 13 at the Centro Banamex, is the most important event for the automotive components industry in the whole Latin American region.
Last year's edition saw the participation of 546 firms from 20 countries, spread over a 21,000 square meter exhibition area, for the benefit of 17,577 visitors from 34 countries. In 2007 the organisers - the German Fair Agency (www.messefrankfurt.com) forecast a rise in the number of exhibitors to 550 from 22 countries.
The Mexican fair touches upon a wide range of sectors in the industry: drivetrain, chassis, bodywork, electrics and electronics parts and components; systems and modules for interior and exterior fittings, drivetrains, driving dynamics and electronic commands; car accessories, special fittings and design enhancing accessories; equipment for vehicle servicing and repairs, bodywork repairs and painting, furnishing and management of car dealerships; equipment for petrol stations and car care products.
In Mexico the automotive components, accessories and spares industries accounts for 1,3% of national GDP and 7,3% of exports for the manifacturing industry. The sector is heavily concentrated: 6% of firms produce 59,7% of the industry's total output.
After a few difficult years, at the beginning of 2006 the imports of Italian cars in Mexico restarted, thanks to the agreement between Fiat and a local distributor for the commercialisation of several models and the development of a sales and after-sales services network on Mexican territory. And although Italy cannot claim yet to have a significant role in Mexico as an automotive supplier, in recent years the presence of its firms has progressively grown thanks to the appreciation in the market for the quality, design and creative features that - particularly for accessories - set apart 'Made in Italy' products.
Furthermore, in the course of the last year particular attention was paid to the sub-contracting and components industry, in the light of the strong performance of the Mexican automotive industry. Conscious of the expanding interest in the Mexican market for accessories, automotive components and garage equipment, for what have now been a few years ICE has mantained an institutional presence at the Mexican fair. The 2007 official Italian delegation, which will exhibit its wares in a 162 square meter dedicated pavillion, will include firms which have already taken part to the PAACE fair as well as firms with an established presence on the Mexican market.
