CAR COMPONENTS: THE CHALLENGE IN RUSSIA

CAR COMPONENTS: THE CHALLENGE IN RUSSIA   The thirteenth edition of MIMS – the Moscow international motor show – will be held from 26 to 30 August 2009 at the futuristic Crocus Expo in Moscow. It is considered one of the most important international exhibitions for the motor trade and its related industries, from components to accessories, as well as equipment for workshops and specialised garages. It is an appointment not to be missed for industry players who see the need to globalise their businesses. Once more at this year’s MIMS, the Italian companies will be represented by an official delegation, organised by the National Institute for Foreign Trade (ICE), in collaboration with ANFIA (the Italian Association of Automotive Industries) and AICA (Italian Automotive Service Equipment Manufacturers Association). The Italian contingent is made up of ten companies specialised in components and accessories, and in particular suspension and transmission systems, satellite tracking, replacement parts, production of adhesive materials and construction of diagnostic instruments. All of these are solutions that depend on next generation technological innovations to provide the sector with solutions that can improve the quality of the final products, and help them withstand the crisis. There is a lot of expectation for the new offers from the Italian industry. Italy is internationally recognised as having a considerable aptitude for exports, and though conditioned by the crisis, it is nevertheless resistant to it, as the most recent data from the Italian Association of Automotive Industries shows. In fact, in the first quarter of 2009, 37.3% of the cars, 70.7% of the commercial vehicles, 18.6% of the lorries and14.1% of the chassis produced in Italy were exported. The volume of exports amounted to 44.6% of total production. The strategic importance of MIMS lies in the fact that, despite the global recession, Russia remains an interesting context for industry operators, having the third largest motor vehicle market in Europe, after Germany and Great Britain. It is also a market with a considerable growth margin, particularly for foreign brands. The favourable trend observed in the automobile industry is mainly due to import and to the assembly of foreign vehicles in plants that are either newly built or already existing. Some figures can help give an idea of the global dimensions of MIMS: 40,150 square metres of exhibition floor space, 800 exhibitors, of which 519 are international, representing 32 countries, with 57 being sponsors or media partners. The Russian exhibition, which covers all product categories of the automobile sector, is divided into four main areas: “parts and components”, “accessories”, “maintenance equipment” and “service stations”. MIMS is organised by the ITE group, a multinational specialised in setting up international trade fairs.
